In reading my post fully, you'll notice that I didn't encourage any "spot reduction". I specifically encouraged a healthier diet and general aerobic excercise hence the running/swimming etc. (I suppose I could have spelled out biking as part of etcetera.) As far as doing some ab work to strengthen core muscles I suggested simply b/c I took the liberty of assuming that like most men I know (especially those that don't like their midsections) our friend was perhaps working towards some sort of a washboard or flat stomach look. In that case the best way to accomplish that is to have a solid core on which to build. Abdominal fat is hard to get rid of, and abs are hard to develop and build, alot of people end up with very strong ab muscles and still lack deffiniteion, or find it hard to get rid of that last little bit of the fat they've been working to lose. Doing overall core excercises in addition to situps or crunches will help get past that last little hurdle, besides core strength also contributes alot to fencing.

Most people lose about 10 pounds by either switching to diet cola/pop/soda or by giving up cola/pop/soda altogether.

The other suggestions here are also pretty decent. You should contact a doctor though if you're going to go on a serious weight loss program.

I guess that wasn't clear, since he was only asking about losing weight.
In any case, someone looking to lose that kind of wieght is unlikely to
take off enough abdominal fat to have any chance at a washboard stomach.

try strength training-it can be the best (and sometimes quickest) way to lose weight and build muscle. there's a book that specializes on weight lifting for fencing-you may want to have a look at it. also, take up a new hobby that that's fun, keeps you moving, and that you enjoy; for me, its Irish dance, and I sweat alot without even noticing that I'm exercising.

    Re: fiber

[QUOTE=bigdawg2121]For what it's worth I'm going to have to say that I have no clue what this fibre obsession is all about. I'd be interested in hearing about it though, maybe I'll add metamucil to my diet as a training supplement.

Big D - Briefly, fiber seems to decrease appetite for some people, just by its bulk - so you end up feeling like eating less as you pursue your chosen weight loss plan. This seems to work for a lot of people.
In the overall general picture, most of us do not get enough fiber in our diets - which can be painful if it ends up as constipation. The other benefit long term for your health is probably a reduction in your risks for colon cancer. I'm not aware of it's use in a more specific way in athletic training.

Also those Irish dancers end up with very quick feet and major strong
quads. And yes, I'm a Feis Dad.

Get stacker 2s, eat some chicken salads and exercise. 15 pounds in a month is nothing if you just stay dedicated to your diet and exercise. I wouldn't advice atkins or an all protein diet because you're denying your body elements it needs. Shortcut diets are good for the short term, but long term they mess you up. As for working out, I'd recommend high reps low weight for burning more calories and hopping on that treadmill as long as you can bare it.

    yeah...former wrestler.

if anything, do the South Beach Diet and skip the diet pills- they are NOT good for you (or your heart) and they can make you feel like crap while in your system.

but then again there's the old-fashioned way that never fails yet people dont seem to acknowledge:
1.) exercise! (every day better yet)
    2.) portion control!
3.) Eat healthfully and eat only when you're hungry!
    4.) Dont daydream about food!

    Hope this helps...

I agree. I only recommended the stacker 2's because without a wrestling or equally intensive workout routine, losing 15 pounds will be a pain in the butt. Heh, I remember when I lost that in 2 days...boy was that unhealthy.
