Array If I had an extra $50 I would wonder where the hell it came from.
I hate money, but I love shopping, so I'd have to say all of the above (spending more than the $50). Winning isn't everything, it just lets you fence longer.

Array $50?
$10/day for three Prise de Fer tournaments (91 5-touch bouts, 4 15-touch bouts, 2 medals, a sword, and a PdF patch) this past weekend.
$20 Division Championships (with all of 10 people, I've heard :eyeroll:) this coming Saturday.
Mmmm, doesn't cover gas or tolls (Philly to Boston and back twice).
That's what I've spent my most recent $50 of entertainment money on.

Mmmm, doesn't cover gas or tolls (Philly to Boston and back twice). And it doesn't cover the money for the overpriced hotdogs and pizza, either. But one good look at that sword you got, and wasn't it all worth it? Forget the medals - which were plentiful enough for you - THAT SWORD!
BTW, nice job. You're scary. -

BTW, nice job. You're scary. Didn't spend any money on over-priced hotdogs or pizza. I rarely eat while fencing (bad, I know, especially on days like those). Ate breakfast on my way each morning (sausage, egg & cheese on a croissant from Dunkin' Donuts.... Mmmmm), ate after fencing each day (brought a sandwich and fruit on Sunday, wraps and fruit on Monday, in both cases ended up not eating until I was done, although I brought them in order to be able to eat during the day if necessary). Drank lots of water. Given that the food was raided from my Mom's refrigerator, I don't think I can tag a direct monetary cost to it. :)
So what's your motivation?
I enjoy fencing. I enjoy competing. I enjoy performing well. They were offering a sword for the top 3-weapon performance and I've never won a sword prize before. These were my primariy motivation (okay, I have four "primary" motivations... these were the top tier motivations, if you will). Secondary considerations included having an excuse to finally go check out PdF's new space, seeing many fencing friends, an additional training opportunity, a shot at re-earning classifications (re-earned all three, although the sabre was already current-year, came within one 4-5 loss from earning an improved foil rating), I like bright shinies, I got to visit with my Mom, who lives in the area, it kept me busy on a weekend, and a whole bunch of other reasons that most people here probably don't care about.
While there were lots of other benefits, that's clearly (to me anyway) $50 spent on entertainment. And, especially the $30 for the PdF tournaments, money well spent. Given the amount I drink (or don't), money better spent (for me, not necessarily for other people) than on sangria (although, to be fair, there's significant value in enjoyable time with friends, time which can be obtained either while fencing at a tournament, or relaxing with fun, summertime drinks in hand).
Swordwench- You didn't introduce yourself. :( From context in other posts I finally figured out this morning who you are in RL.

Array Money can't buy happiness.
But it does buy stuff, and experiences.
And stuff makes me happy. And so do experiences.
That said, by the time I figured out what to spend that $50 on, it's already been spent on diapers and baby food and toys.
Which also makes me happy! Just because you have the right, that doesn't mean it is right. -

That would buy me 3 lessons from my coach and a beer for each of us. (Once)
Probably? It would go towards my travel fund for this summer. -

Array Sorry I had to go with a flawed pole due to the lack of alchol purchase (beer wine Tequlia) Besides if I bought another book I would have to buy more book ends or another book shelf and then I am over the 50 I started with The Epeeman, the Epeeman, in frayed and tattered gear
Can lick his weight in wildcats and can drink his weight in beer
And for the foil and sabreman he hasn't any fear
