    Wanted-Head/Asst. Coaches-Girl's Fencing Team

North Hunterdon High School in Annandale, New Jersey (North II/Div III) seeks both a head and assistant coach for their girls’ fencing team for the 2005-06 winter season.

The head coach must have a valid NJ teacher certification (or equivalent certification), substantial knowledge of the sport and successful experience coaching fencers.

Added responsibilities include being able to effectively instruct, organize and supervise the JV and Varsity level team. Hours would be after school/early evening with some weekend meets.

Contact: John Deutsch, Director of Athletics NHHS, 908-713-4152, jdeutsch@nhvweb.net.

Does anyone out there have suggestions on where / how to post for a coach? We're trying local clubs, and I thought I'd try putting out some flyers at Nationals. This is a great group of girls, and with some more dedicated coaching, they could be amazing. The team has a tradition of strong foilists, mostly because of a local club. Our coach last year was only part time because of work conflicts, so the girls have been teaching each other. It shoulc be rewarding because they WANT a coach so much.
So, again, if anyone has ideas of how to find a coach, please post them.
    Thanks.

What is going to hurt you is the "must have a valid NJ teacher certification."

That the majority of persons "with a substantial knowledge of the sport and successful experience coaching fencers" do not have. I'm not trying to be a party pooper just pointing this out.

Don't forget to post to the NJ Division message board. And for what it is worth, I heard that Bernards High School in Bernards Twp, NJ is looking for an asst coach, but I do not know the details.

    Thanks for the input.
Our Athletic Director wrote the ad, so I actually agree with a lot that has been said. Since our previous head coach did not have a teaching cert, I'm not sure why that's been included this time. I'll talk to him to see if we have any flexibility on that one. We're gonna need it - The high school in the next town over lost their coach (Voorhees). I've heard of several other high schools that are looking for new coaches as well. This could be tough.

I echo the advice to send to the NJUSFA mailing list. Also, if something is of sufficiently general interest that it should be on the NJ Division website - http://www.njfencing.org - just send it to me. Normally that's club information, or information about competitions, workshops or other events. I can ask the powers-that-be if there should be an job section too.

One of the NJSIIA requirements is that at least one coach has to have a teaching certificate -- it can even a parent who is a teacher. If your previous coach didn't have one, then there must have been an assistant coach who did.

I have no idea if this applies here, but sometimes a substitute teachers certificate is good enough to satisfy this type of requirement. Often all you need to get a substitute certificate is a bachelors degree in any subject and to fill out some paperwork with the state. Good luck finding someone interested and qualified!

I don't know what happened, but coaching Nielsen for 4 yrs might have been enough to force him into an early retirement.

Oh Please, I don't want to be responsible for bad rumors!!!! I cause enough trouble around here. The GIRL's coach is leaving (or so we've heard). Not every school keeps the Boys/Girls fencing teams as separate as we do.

Jeff, once I talk with the AD, and get the firm requirements, I'll let you know. Thanks.
