| I am going to paint my mask! After all the talk of color, I've decided to personalize my mask. Has anyone else done it? I am probably going to paint with a small brush. I will also be applying masking tape to the entire interior of the mask to keep from painting it as well.
Any ideas for a design? I am considering the state of Texas or a white and blue diamond shape with black lines between the diamonds.
Any suggestions?

Doesn't that kinda defeat the idea of personalization????
oh well....
my suggestions:
1) An unlit lightbulb.... (like the one seen when there are not new posts on this board).
2) Bright orange, like a pumpkin..... oh wait.... I think that one is taken....
3) Lime green with neon pink polka-dots.
I know these are not the best suggestions, but I am sure that there is a gentleman in N.C. by the name of Blakeborough who could make some better ones..... |

| Actually, I was more or less interetsed in suggestions on how to do it (i.e. its better to spray paint) stuff like that.

| I'd leave well enough alone. Unless you're buying one of the PBT colored masks you'll just look like an idiot.

| D'Art, I did it once many, many moons ago. And I'm thinking of doing it again, if I ever get off my keister to actually do it. (Sloth is a terrible thing...)
I painted the mesh black (most new masks had white mesh back then), then masked it, then painted a gold four-point star in the center. It is a simple design that lends itself to using tape for straight lines, which is why I did it.
As for technique, I spray-painted. Mask off the parts you don't want painted (use paper fixed by tape) and line the inside of the mesh with newspaper to keep the overspray from going through. Then spray away.
One thing I discovered is that the bright paint actually increased glare inside the mask and made it harder to see. I fixed that by spraying the inside of the mask with black. I was afraid that it would mess up the design on the outside, but it didn't seem to have any effect. And it was much easier to see through after that.
Good luck. Let us know how it turns out.

| If you want ideas, click below and look at Paolo Milanoli's Epee mask.

| That is such a great mask!
D'art, so long as you don't paint it like a british jack, or concentric cirles you should be fine. It would just look like a really great epee target.

| I haven't been to Escrime-tv in a while. When I last looked they must have been setting up - lots of broken links. The site seems to work fine now. My only critisism would be that the screen size for the footage is too small to do fencing justice. Does anyone know how to view the footage without having to use the embedded player. I can't find a way round it.
They get a thumbs up for the effort thought |

| For a Halloween-themed fencing tourney, the ladies at Schoolcraft (we are entirely TOO nutty sometimes) decided to paint our masks. I painted an green alien on one, & mine had a white skull. We had a devil too, as I recall, & maybe a jack-o-lantern. It was great fun. I can't remember what kind of paint we used.

| I have personalized my mask with counted croess stitch..the even weave of the mesh is a perfect pallet. I get several comments everytime i take it out which are quite positive.
I had worried that there were legalities involved but found none in the rule book. One "funny" armourer doing my mask check tried to tell me I couldn't do it but, I was ready for him and about to argue when he said he was kidding.
The next thing Iplan to personalize is my..ahem..chest protector..any suggestions?

| i just thought that i would be sorta great to paint a picture of a really strong fencer on the front of the mask and go to the nationals, sorta like trading lames, but i wouldn't know about that. opps. |

| Wow, so you've gotten so good at your fencing that you can't fill your hours with practice, drills, exercise, lessons, competition, and fixing weapons? You have to go looking for something like this to do with your fencing time?
Anyway, if you must do it, at least do it well. I recommend a trip to a large SCA fencing event for a sobering lesson in how not to do it...

| Hey D'art, take it to one of those airbrush caricature painters they have at fairs, and have them paint your face on it but with your eyes closed. |
