Board Features

What features do you like the most or most want to see on the board?

Note - I'm using this to evaluate the current program vs. some other programs that I've been looking to test. Fencing.Net will most likely be moving to another hosting provider soon and I want to make sure that I've got all the features that will be needed outlined.

I submit the opinion that, while the other features would be nifty (though some more useful than others), there is no real purpose in ranking the top posts. Ranking posters would be kinda neat, but ranking the posts would be a rather pointless feature...
I'm posting this even though I filled out the poll because it looks like most people have just clicked on everything... Or clicked through it, just to see the results...

The feature I've found most useful on other boards is the one which takes one to the "most recent unread post"---cuts down on the scrolling a bit. But it's more of a luxury than a necessity...
Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you!

I wanted to choose "gremlins", but it's not offered as a choice!

I'd like my rank to be "Ultimate Lurker."

I like the idea of knowing who is actually on the board at any time. Sometimes when I am board I just sit around and refresh hoping that someone has added a post.

go out and do something constructive, go for a run.
i just got back from a little run (she mused) and a doctors appointment, then i ran into a homeless lady that i like to give money to. we had a little chat. i felt bad and came to the coffee place to post. i am becoming a human wreck. i have nothing to do but post. would you agree that this is fairly healthy? {nods) okay, i see that you agree. I feel that i can be too critical. I would like to see less squabbling. i would like to ask for moon to shut up when people don't agree with her, and for swordsman to stop writing about blood.

135711,

Go home and love your kitties, if you have any. I miss mine. Have been thinking about getting one for while I'm here, but then what would I do about when I leave. The Queen in Texas would never accept a interloper. Sigh.

Craig,

I love ALL the features that you have. If you can migrate them to the new host, great, but if you can't, well, we'll adapt. We always do.

Remember those who put their lives in danger for your sake.

For your copy of "The Care and Feeding of All Things Fencing", Second Edition go to The Armorer's Store, Fencing.net or www.homfencing.com

One thing that might be neat, and I don't know the logistics of this exactly... would be to see if you have any PMs when you log onto the chat board... instead of having to check your ID...
Just a thought, not a big deal
A moment of peril is often also a moment of open-hearted kindness and affection. We are thrown off our gaurd by the general agitation of our feelings, and betray the intensity of those which, at more tranquil periods, our prudence at least conceals, if it cannot altogether supress them.

I'll be moving this to phpbb which runs off of a mysql back end instead of using flat/text files to set everything.

If you want to geek out on the features, etc. available, then check out www.phpbb.com.

It's open source, and there are some nice mods available. It will just take time to integrate them all.

The nice things that phpbb has are:
- Notification of pm's
- User groups, so people can be grouped manually instead of ranked only by posts

Cheers,
Craig

Thanks for your feedback. The new board will definately have avatars and will also have custom 'user groups' so that I can add people to different groups (armorer, sabre expert, etc.) based upon expertise, etc.

shyheidi has been working in her free time on a new look for fencing.net and I'm very excited about it.

Cheers,
Craig
