    Competing with other sports

Don't you guys just HATE is when you are talking to someone about fencing, and then all of a sudden some idiot who you don't know comes up to you and tells you that fencing is dumb and its not a real sport? They just don't know what it takes to be a fencer. Post your experiences!

Worse: Try working at a newspaper where all the sports news space is dedicated to the three classic big 'ball' games or anything with a pro circuit. Then imagine trying to convince your editor peers to cover one of your local fencing events.

What I love is how when I go to the water fountain outside in the hall and some a****** starts "mimicking" what fencing is like, making all sorts of stupid noises and galloping like a horse in one place with their arm sticking out...and I don't even know them!

God, who looks like the stupid one? Typically I just say, "yep..." in a flat tone and walk away.

well, also, people have to realize that in the public eye, fencing is just about as interesting as watching the 24 Hours of Le Ballet. It just ain't all that interesting! I brought one of my friends to a local SoCal tournie, and she was just bored out of her mind! i dunno how she could've! I guess you just have to be a fencer to truly appreciate fencing. Am I wrong?

I've taken people to fencing tournaments and they've enjoyed it tremendously. It helps to have a good place to sit, which isn't always possible.

    Grady;

Beats me. I showed one of my drum corps championship tapes to a friend years ago and she really got into it. Her roommate looked disdainfully at the screen and walked off. Takes all kinds.

Actually, you kinda did the same a few weeks ago when Garson and I were telling war stories. remember how fast we lost you?

See ya a Div I foil tomorrow!

Need fencing equipment? See me at H.O.M. Fencing Supply

Going to your first tournament? Read "Choose yer weapon, Laddie (or: Dude, where's my foil?)"

I also work for a newspaper/publishing company. Not much enthusiasm from the sports editor
BUT I must say I have never had any problems re teasing or making fun of it! The only person who makes fun of me (or fencing at work) is me: must have something to do with the fact that they are all **** scared of me lol!
Seriously though you cant blame the sports ed as fencing is not exactly gonna rake in the readers and take it from me newsprint is EXPENSIVE and space is at a premium.

You want competing? My old club lost its place of practice to a BUNCH OF CHEERLEADERS!! (Sorry I still get cheesed off when I think of all those bubbleheads) The sports that they are affliated with are so much more popular than fencing. The need for a practice space for us was secondary to the public(men)seeing pom-poms (umm...yeah pom-poms)shaking in their faces.

deep breath,OK back in my happy place

Actually, it's the opposite for me. They are usually curious about the sport and ask questions.

Me too Lumberg, I think its got something to do with the way one presents, rather than the sport.
Most people are extremely interested in it (except my family I think my watching fencing videos every day had something to do with that though lol).
