| Transgendered Athletes Hey All,
Just figured I'd start a new thread of discussion.
Heard on CBC news this morning about a female mountain biker who is questioning the participation of another female mountain biker because the other athlete used to be a man.
Does a woman who used to be a man have an unfair athletic advantage? If so, where should they compete?
James.

| Here's part of an article about the IOC's opinion on the subject Quote: |
Originally Posted by IOC on Transgendered Athletes IOC medical director Patrick Schamasch, meanwhile, told the media that the issue of transgendered atheletes “has been something of an open door. We needed some rules and regulations in place.”
The IOC guidelines are divided into two categories: “before puberty” and “after puberty.”
For sex changes before puberty, the prospective Olympians are accepted as the genders they became.
After puberty, however, the guidelines set three conditions:
“Surgical anatomical changes have been completed, including external genitalia changes and gonadectomy,” or removal of ovaries or testes.
“Legal recognition of their assigned sex has been conferred by the appropriate official authorities.”
“Hormonal therapy appropriate for the assigned sex has been administered in a verifiable manner and for a sufficient length of time to minimize gender-related advantages in sport competitions.”
Additionally, the IOC guidelines statement includes an “opinion” that “eligibility should begin no sooner than two years after gonadectomy.”
The guidelines also note, “It is understood that a confidential case-by-case evaluation will occur. In the event that the gender of a competing athlete is questioned, the medical delegate (or equivalent) of the relevant sporting body shall have the authority to take all appropriate measures for the determination of the gender of a competitor.” |

In the event that the gender of a competing athlete is questioned...
| Now wouldn't that be awkward? |

And I believe this is the article mentioned above.

| quote of the article Zmurf's listed below:
The sex-change guidelines prompted one cultural commentator, R. Albert Mohler Jr., to note that the IOC announcement came in “a week already infamous for sexual confusion,” referencing the court-ordered same-sex “marriage” licenses that became available May 17 in Massachusetts.
Now what has one to do with the other? I believe these are two 100% different subjects.
"a week infamous for sexual confusion"
What a nice way to put the matter that this guy probably missed the train...if these are things that still confuse him in 2005!Hello?
Interesting discussion, this transgender olympic athletes topic. I have actually never ever lost a thought over this....

| men and women are equals, and anyone who points out differences is a bad person. having separate sports leagues and events is an outmoded relic of a paternalistic and sexist world view. the issue should not be whether transsexuals should be allowed to compete against x or y, but why the competitions are not co-ed to begin with.

| OMG. Feminists always make me laugh. It's like...sheer blind denial. They should all enter a kickboxing ring with a male opponent (same weight class of course!) so they can learn the shut the hell up. Ha!

You a kick boxer by any chance? | Cowpaste has a good point though. I hate listening to women who say that women's sports are the same level athletically as men's. That's not to say that women's sports are not respectable. Their just very different and that's why they should be separate. However, I'm not attacking feminists. Feminists are intelligent women who understand that they are unfairly treated in many respects. The women I am attacking are those who think they're better than men in every respect and that all men should die. I like to call these women Womynists . They have no sense of reality.

I dunno, but reading HAY's post, I get the impression she (he?) had tongue firmly planted in cheek. Or perhaps intended to get exactly such a rise out of someone, who would then reveal their inner archie bunker. (But a fencer doing something devious with a second intention? ... naaaaah)

| There was a brazilian judoka who competed in Athens who used to be a man and is now a woman. She came close to winning a bronze medal but lost IIRC.
