Array Tournaments in a season About how many tournaments does you Div hold in a year? Or if you live in a small div, how many are held in the nearby area? I know in the southeast (Georgia) it is not uncommon to be able to go to a tournamnet almost every weekend for most of the season. At the worst there will be two a month.
How about other areas? If you give a man a fire, he is warm for the night.

Array My first thought when asked that question is "too many!" We at LEAST try to have one or two tourneys a month from August to May, our official season in Michigan. Last year, I believe we had one just about every weekend. That was a quick way to burn out...& go broke! "Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind."

We're probably a small- to medium-sized division. We hold about one tournament a month. There's always foil. Sabre and epee are 2-3 times per year (not counting divisionals). The core group of competitive fencers (about 5) usually goes to all of the NAC's, Summer Nationals, and the larger regional events within a reasonable (6 hours or so) driving distance. -

Array The Bay Cup series in the SF Bay Area has events every weekend (see the website's schedule: www.olagrande.net/users/edew/baycup/schedule.html
However, it boils down to only six events in each event category. Still, I fence about 17 tournaments a year: the six Bay Cup, the six PCS circuit, the Division Championships, the Sectional Championships, the NACs and Summer Nationals. That's quite a bit, a little more than twice a month, considering that we don't fence in August and September, and some months (December) is somewhat restricted due to holidays. -

Array It depends onthe size of the division, of course. Wyoming's only got 31 people total, according to the last report at the USFA...that's a good sized open foil in SoCal.
This season we scheduled 22 days of competitions, totalling 75 seperate events.
That's the curse of being the 3rd largest div in the nation, I guess, but I get a LOT of fencing in!

Array I should menttion that almost all of those tournaments held are three weapon. (although the sabre events often tend to have 6 fencers or less, the same for most of the exclusivly women's events) If you give a man a fire, he is warm for the night.

Array In the Philadelphia Division we have a tournament or two every week, based on the glance I just took at the online schedule.
Some of them are very small. Especially the sabre. Others are medium-sized. We have very few large ones. "Arm yourself, Watson, there is an evil hand afoot ahead." -- Dennis Pierce, 2010 Bulwer-Lytton contest, detective fiction category runner-up. Similar Threads -
