Array Yale Cohen may apply to compete at the NCAAs via the open category. Iris Zimmermann wasn't at the Western Regionals either, and she'll be competing at the NCAA Championships via the open entry (don't know the exact term). -

Array petitioning in for an "at-large" bid?
-B "Oh but you can't expect to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you!" -
if you're top four in the usfa standings, then you auto qualify for ncaas and hence don't have to go to regionals. that's why iris was able to skip it. that's also why jed was able to skip regionals last year. for mf only jon tiomkin is in the top four this year, and hence only he is auto. yale banked on being top four when he signed up for venice, but unfortunately didn't make it. he asked micahnik to sign a waiver for him, but micahnik didn't because he's a wang. too bad micahnik's the only one that's gonna lose out. whatev. -
Well, the list of qualifiers is out, so how about some revised predictions? (Considering that some of Eric's picks for the individual finalists didn't even make the cut...)
For WS, I'd say:
1. Jacobson
2. Bond-Williams
3. Gelman (yes, I am still giving her my vote of confidence, especially after watching her fence @ NE Regionals)
4. ? Either Lui or one of the PSU girls, what does everyone else think? (I might have said Purcell before her injury, but now it's out of the question)
I haven't watched enough of epee or men's sabre to make predictions, and I haven't seen enough of the top foilists from other regions... "I've had just about enough of your Vassar-bashing, young lady!" -Homer Simpson -

Array WS: Jacobson, Gelman (she's getting more consistent finally), Crane. Jemal really ought to be up there by now but maybe she needs another year. Bond-Williams maybe. Array You gotta include Bond-Williams in the top-4. She's internationally ranked. -
Senior Member
Array I don't have to put her in the top 4, though I did list her. I think the others are better than her. Besides, internationally-ranked is not always better. It's just more experienced, or more likely to travel because your club is savvy. Until recently, I consistently beat another internationally-ranked WS fencer (she finally beat me in South Bend last time). Array Sabre top 4:
1. Ivan Lee( only because Weber is not in full health)
2. Alex Weber
3.Colin Parker
4.Paul Friedman
People to watch out for next season(best kept secrets):
1. Richard Frank(Drew Only one loss during the regular season, but didnt do as good in the mid-atlantic regionals)
2.Tal Ben (switched to sabre from epee, did pretty good in a tough northeast division regionals)
3.Wesely Newkirk ( pretty good lefty, i think a freshman)
3. "Learn five things better than anyone else, and you will be a world champion." -Chaba Elthes -

Array Tal Ben-Yaacov has always been sabre (club-mate of mine). His brother Shai is the epeeist. "Arm yourself, Watson, there is an evil hand afoot ahead." -- Dennis Pierce, 2010 Bulwer-Lytton contest, detective fiction category runner-up. -

You don't figure Jason Rogers in there somewhere? Paul's good, but there are plenty others on the list who can take Paul on. -

Okay, I admit I was wrong about Bond-Williams (Ohio State)--she had the solid tight British experience and Nazlymov's coaching and did a really nice job. In fact, the only reason she lost to Sada Jacobson (Yale) in the gold medal bout was I think she got psyched out. She was winding up, which she never does.
I really didn't think Sakinah Shaahid (Temple) would make the top four in the WS but she has finally made the transition from epeeist to sabre fencer (yes, I know she switched a couple of years ago, but now she's really fencing sabre). She almost beat Sada Jacobson in the semi-final and almost beat Julia Gelman in the third-place bout.
Women's epee--Kerry Walton over Stephanie Eim, and both of them over the malfunctioning timer on the machine (what a brouhaha).
And my daughter, despite the broken foot, didn't finish last. And we took her fencing bag home with us so she can't fence any more for a couple of months. "Arm yourself, Watson, there is an evil hand afoot ahead." -- Dennis Pierce, 2010 Bulwer-Lytton contest, detective fiction category runner-up. -

Array 24 people per weapon go to nationals.
One big round robin pool in each weapon. The results from the pools are what determine which school wins.
The top 4 people in each weapon are then seeded into a DE tableau to determine the individual champions.
The actual mechanics of how the pool is run: The 24 people are split into 8 groups of 3. Each group fences amongst themselves. Each group then rotates to fence each other group so you rotate with the two people you started the day with.

Yale
Princeton
UPenn
...
Called Nontapat for 1st in MF
Called Ivan Lee for 1st in MS
Called Sada Jacobson for 1st in WS
...
Not a bad prediction. What about next year?
I'll put OSU at least in second. PSU might
not win it next season. Their epee squad
will be losing some folks. -
