The steamy sex soap that is Finnish politics... Hi!
I saw this in the paper sometime ago, and find it quite funny. Not sure whether it goes here or in water cooler though. (Gav. - please enlighten me). From Aftonbladet, 2005-04-29. Stilted translation by me.
---- Love links between Finnish top politicians are a true reality show - where everyone has been hooked up with eveyone. Now they are competing for the presidential office.
Now, all the relations in Finnish politics have come into the limelight, due to the impending presidential elections next year. In a Finnish newspaper it is described in this way: " The former girlfriend of the Secretary of State (Erkki Tuomioja), Tanja Halonen, is running for the preidential post, and competing with the ex-boyfriends of Minister of Cultural Affairs, Tanja Karpela."
The papers started to write about it when the centrist party leader, Prime Minister Matti Vahanen, wife Merja announced that the couple had separated. Rumours went that a 3rd person could be involved. The political journalists picked up an old scandal. 1999, it was shown that Matti Vahanen had had a romance with the ex-beauty miss and congresswoman Tanja Karpela, which she also acknowleged. It was considered that it was due to Matti Vahanen that she rose quickly from the congress to the governement, and now is Minister of Cultural Affairs. Tanja Karpela was also for a long time engaged to the former Minister of finance, and ex-leader of the (what in Finland passes for) Conservative party.
Matti Vahanen waited a while after the separation from his wife and announced his candidacy also. The Romance rumours are a problem for him, since he has liked to defend family values (not common among Nordic politicians). So, how does the present President fit into all this? Well, she is often reminded that she was the girlfriend of Erkki Tuomioja for 30 years ago. When she in 2000 as a new president was found out to be living in a relation where she had a long-time relation but did not live together with him, she was more or less forced to get married due to all the writings in the papers.
----
So much for the article. It also contains a picture of Tanja Karpela, who easily can hold her own in the looks department compared to Sylwia Gruchala.
Her is a link showing a picture of her on a bad looks day: http://www.seiska.fi/viihde/julkkisbiot/?a=4534
The speaker of the Finnish parliament 1994-2003, Riitta Uosukainen, pusblished an autobigraphy in the early 90ies in which she described the role of her waterbed in her marital love life. It was published before she became speaker, she was a lower-level politician at the time. She also volunteered the info that her hubby was massively endowed, and knew how to use it. Since he had not read the book before it was published, he was quite surprised that the info got out. One would assume that it caused some mirth at his job, he was an army officer.
Imagine this happening in the USA! Condi Rice is nothing compared to those Finns!
Have a nice time!

Please, don't do this to me. I'm starting to get physically ill every time I see minister
Tanja ' I'm so pretty that I don't have to answer nasty and difficult questions made by other MPs ' Karpela mentioned. I seriously think that she's in Finnish politics just because some evil conspiracy to boost up evening&women's magazines sales....

Array Thanks, Peter! Now we have to use immense amounts of beer to wind JyJy down...
As creditable source of information as Aftonbladet is, there are some minor errors in there:
- President Halonen was not 'girlfriend' of Tuomioja, but more or less 'significant other' -- in the '70s.
- Prime minister and Karpela had 'an affair' only in tabloids. His wife left most probably because she can't stand politics (or publicity) and his husband decided to run for president...
- Karpela did have a public 'serious relationship' with former financial minister, current presidential candidate Niinistö.
Here's some images of Karpela about 7 years ago, apparently on a 'better looks day' (they might not be complately worksafe, though): In blacks In whites
Finland is so damn small country that everybody who's nowadays somebody in politics has been in Helsinki University in the late '60s or early '70s, 'making love, not war'.
Regarding parlamentary chairperson Uosukainen, nobody took her seriously even before the book.
But it became en vogue for elderly women in politics to publish 'erotic' texts for some time... "...assess, analyze, adjust..." a desperate chant in 1 to 14 situation in quarterfinals -

Does anyone have her phone number? Hmm... "Politics is the art of the possible"... (quote from "Evita")..
This gives an entire new meaning to "lobbying" for votes...
Dang, and you compare her to the two female US Senators that California has...
Barbara Boxer: http://boxer.senate.gov/news/i/photo_2005.jpg

And now that we're talking business, who's this Ann Coul..er...something.. person, the one about whom neocons have wet dreams about (read it
somewhere else in the net)?
Finally, my last post was made by my evil twin.
(Just remembered that miss Karpela is in control of goverment funds given to sports

Does anyone have her phone number? Since you did not move it, I take it that it was OK. Anyway, here is the (I think so, at least) link to her email contact page on here homepage: http://www.tanjakarpela.net/palaute.html
However, be advised that everything is in Finnish, a language not similar to any else except Estonian.
Concerning Boxer and Feinstein: Maybe you could get the governator to invite her for a top-level political meeting? The press would love it!
Have a nice time!
