Set your VCR: fencing on ER March 7 From what I could tell of the TV show previews, it looks as though John and Luka go at it with epees in next week's episode. They don't like each other, ya know, and I'm pretty sure they're fighting over Abby. So, yeah, it turns nasty.
All this from a 10-second teaser...
Sounds like fun, eh? -

Array TV fencing: sort of like passing a fatal accident. You want to look, but you suspect that you'll be horrified if you do... Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -
yeah, did you see the sabre episode of Frasier? (eek, it was so bad!!) "I've had just about enough of your Vassar-bashing, young lady!" -Homer Simpson -

Array SECRETS AND LIES 03/07/02
CHANGE-OF-PACE EPISODE STRIPS POLITE VENEER OFF DOCTORS WHO ARE ORDERED TO ATTEND SEMINAR -- In a dramatic change-of-pace episode, after a bout of horseplay following a dominatrix' appearance in the ER, Dr. Weaver (Laura Innes) orders Abby (Maura Tierney), Dr. Carter (Noah Wyle), Dr. Lewis (Sherry Stringfield), Dr. Kovac (Goran Visjnic) and Dr. Gallant (Sharif Atkins) into a day-long sexual harassment seminar -- which unleashes a torrent of truth about their mutual relationships. While the class is delayed for a tardy instructor, the five share intimate details while alternately mocking and challenging each other -- especially with the thorny romantic attractions involving Abby and Lewis with Carter. What's more, Carter and Kovac kill time by engaging in a roughhouse round of fencing that speaks volumes about their contending interest in Abby. Ming-Na also stars in a script written by executive producer John Wells.

Yeah Zelda, I've seen that one a few times, but I seem to remember the main point of that appearing to be the echoing thud when one of the fencers throws his mask down. It'd be fun if stuff made a noise like that when you dropped it, well, for 5 mins at least. I wish I could think of something witty to write here. -
Boo!! I didn't think it was that great, but I never watch the show so I don't know the backstory of those two guys. It was fun to see fencing on tv though XSwiftblade

Array Ridiculously bad fencing.
Stupid premise
Dangerous presentation.
All in all, an absurd scene in a mediocre episode.
Paolo "He is a man of splendid abilities but utterly corrupt. He shines and stinks like rotten mackerel by moonlight." "Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin to slit throats." -
Well, first of all, the plot details and characterizations were a hoot. My wife and I enjoy ER regardless of the fencing scenes. :-)
But, yeah, during the entire fight we were both commenting on the wide actions and unreasonably close quarters. ... AND WHAT THE HECK WERE THEY THINKING, FENCING WITHOUT EVEN A MASK?!?!
Still, though, I'll give the actors points for some fun choreography and posing. Sheesh. Exagerated and silly, but fun. -

Array I defintely agree with Sciurus Rex. They came out of the room with masks but chose not to use them, probably because their faces would be covered and the drama would be lessoned.
Later 'Abby' points out correctly that they dueled.
Still, media coverage is good almost all the time, barring street fools or 'nuts' with swords getting wacked by cops. -
My wife likes that show and even she laughed--not just at the fencing. I wonder if it is a crime for TV writers to steal material from the movie "The Breakfast Club" like that. The whole episode was just like that movie. I think the show must be on the ropes.

Array Just saw the episode. Sword work was lame even by stage fencing standards, which they covered by not showing a lot of blade work, just dramatic pauses for "touches". I was wondering why they didn't go with sabers, which would have better fit the desire for hackwork.
I was also amused by the dramatic slash at the end of the battle that supposedly puts a cut on Wyle's face. Unless the weapon broke, that would be highly unlikely.
On the other hand, they didn't use stunt doubles, and the weapons looked like real sport epees, so I give them a little bit of credit. Similar Threads -
