Great Lakes Region Fencers How many fencers on this MB are part of the Great Lakes region of the USFA?
I know that the GL region consists of Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky, but why Kentucky? Not that I have anything against Kentucky but I am unaware of any of the Great Lakes touching any part of Kentucky! Is there a logical reason for this that anyone knows?
I live in Detroit region of Michigan and while I am not technically a fencer yet, I am registered to start my beginner's classes next month. Can't wait! Joel

Array Hey Red! We're neighbors!
I'm a member of the Schoolcraft College Fencing Club in Livonia. So is Doug. In fact, he's "Mr. Coach." Pop on by some Friday for some hoopla! "Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind."

I plan on popping by starting May 11th.. that is where I will be taking my beginner's fencing class
I came out there about a month ago and watched Doug give a class and I was won over by his teaching ability and his class ethics.. he taught a very large group of people and handled it extremely well ... I couldnt wait to sign up for the class.. I know that some of the CES office people at Schoolcraft think I am a pain because I couldnt wait till the new class schedule was out to register.... I was probably the first one to register for the class..... I am looking forward to it! See ya soon! Joel

Array I live over in Ypsilanti, Michigan myself. Schoolcraft is a nice place to start out fencing, I enjoyed the classes.

Yes you must be at the EMU club then, I considered going there but it was just a little bit farther than the Schoolcraft club. I do hope one day to cross blades with you!
What weapon(s) do you fence? Joel

Array Red, you've made a wonderful choice. It's a great group to belong to. Schoolcraft has 30 club members right now. We're HONORED to have a Maestro there every Friday to give lessons, & run 2 electric strips (not bad, considering where we started from). You'll DEFINITELY get your money's worth!
And I'm not just saying that because I've been there 7 years! ;0) "Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind."

Array Awesome! I've been assisting Doug, so I'll probably be there when the beginning class starts. Can't miss me.
Oddly enough, it's the day before the Michigan Division championships. It may be a crazy night for us (setting up). On May 12th we'll be at Schoolcraft all day if you're interested in coming to watch!
How exciting...I'll know someone from the beginner's class! "Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind."

Good luck with your class!! Moon's right, Schoolcraft is a great place to fence. The club I belong to is "down the road" a bit in Madison Heights (Renaissance Fencing Club) but has the advantage of being open 6 days a week, some of the Scrafters hang out there on Mon. and Wed. night and you're always welcome to join them!!!. FYI we are holding a tournament Saturday if you want to come and check it out. I'm definatly fencing sabre and will make the (laughable) attempt to fence foil. Hope to see you there!!!! Stanna

Array This is my fifth year of studying foil fencing (3 of which were at Schoolcraft's club). If you feel like visiting EMU's club this summer when Schoolcraft's club isn't open, wednesday from 7 to 11 pm is the best time for it.

Array Red, awesome!
Like Ladybug said, some of the S'crafters visit RFC on weeknights (even Fridays when there is no class at SC). We also have Monday nights (I think, been pretty busy) at the Bailey Center in Westland that we'll be using when SC is on summer break. Equipment is provided. It's hosted by our spin off club the U.F.O. (Underground Fencing Organization). You'll LOVE Jim Vesper...won't Red, ladybug? "Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind."

Thanks Mike, I just might pop in there one day, after I know more about what I am doing!
Moon - Jim Vesper? The coach of the U of M fencing team? I wonder what exactly you are referring to when you say that I will LOVE him!?! I have read somewhere about his "dreaded yellow card" but .... Hmmm.... ?
I am glad that there are other places locally that one can go and talk with other fencers, but is participation at these clubs allowed if you are not really a member?
Lady bug - You have a tournament at RFC this Sat(April 28th)? What time is it? I possibly have a gathering to attend, but if not then I will be glad to attend. Could you give me some info on the times and location of this tournament? Thanks! Joel

30 members? is that in all 30 members? or 30 always active members. because my club (though its huge) we have more than 250 members, and prolly 180 always active members... most of our class's have 30 members in them except the begenning childrens class's we have about 15 there from time to time.

Array 30 total club members, 36 beginners & approximately 25 (?) advanced class members. Most show up every week. Though fencing in a large area, we are limited as to how many people we can accomodate. But I do believe we're one of the largest clubs in Michigan.
Aww...Jim's cool. He's a lot of fun, if he likes ya! The best part is seeing Josh, my dearest brother, get carded. We all cheer for that now. It has become quite a game. "Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind."

Array I am truly flattered at the comments on this post. I want to add that I encourage all of my advanced fencers (and club members) to visit the Renaissance Fencing Club whenever they can. Excellent coaches, nice facility, and they're open 6 days a week! We are truly lucky to have them in our division. And kudos to Amy and Robbie for getting the U.F.O. off the ground for those that want extra fencing without driving to the other side of town! -

Bad timing on this, sorry. I just got a chance to check the board. Anyhow, close of registration times are
Epee - 9:00
Sabre - 12:00
Foil - 2:00
Location is 31171 Stephenson Hwy (between 13 and 14 mile) in Madison Heights.
Hope you get this post and can make it!!!

Doug,
From what I have heard on this forum, and from what I have seen of your teaching in person, you deserve every bit of it! I am looking forward to finding out firsthand on May 11th. See you then!
Ladybug,
Don't worry about it! I had a prior engagement this Saturday and I wouldn't have been able to make it! I do plan to come and watch the Michigan Division Championship on May 12th at Schoolcraft. I hope to see you there!

I'm sorry to admit that I was so zonked at that point I don't remember who I fenced, I just know I was soundly trounced!! Remind me to get more than 3 hrs. sleep before the next tournament. Anyhow, if it was you - Nice Fencing!!!!
