    Another New Fencer

    Hello,

My coach told me to come here to learn how to wire my epee blade and I stayed for the forum. I have been fencing for a little more than a year. I got into fencing when one of my teachers started a fencing club a my high school in Baton Rouge. From there I learned to love the art and sport of fencing at the Baton Rouge Fencing Club. I started out in foil and absolutly hated it. It didn't seem real so I tried saber. Saber was ok but not for me. There was only one weapoin left and I loved it quite alot. I have been taking epee lessons for about 3 months now and have done fairly well in it. My best finish was 3rd at an unrated epee tournament. If there were 2 more people I would have gotten my "E." This forum seems very intresting and hope to learn alot from it.

    Thanks,
Epeeisky(known in real life as Mark)

welcome! i only joined the forum last week but i'm having fun on it!

What do you not like about foil? IMHO, a lot of tactics for epee are the same or very slightly modified in foil. Each to his own preferences, i guess

Some tactics are vary similar, that is why you learn foil first. However, I hated right-of-way, the lightness of the foil, and the shear flexibility of it. Epees and Sabers are real weapons, foils were a court training weapon. Also I didnt like my foil coach that much.

Epeeisky, a word of advice. Don't EVER mention how real or not real a weapon is. You will be attacked so fast, you're head will spin. There was a guy named Von Moss on the forum who complained about how unrealistic the sport of fencing is, and boy did he get it. I don't remember any positive comments, it was merciless. He left the forum the following day, much to the dismay of those who attacked him . If you look at the last page of the fencing discussion area, you'll see that they closed the threads. Don't be a Von Moss! Be a fencer! It's a sport! Who cares about realism?

    (I'm mostly saying this because I'm a die-hard foilist )

But he's right: epee and sabre are descendants, albeit distant ones, of actual weapons. Foil was invented out of whole cloth ( as it were ) as a training tool for the smallsword. Unpopular or not, facts are facts...

Hey, I'm used to being "attacked", so bring it on!

I did not mean it as an attack. It is a historical fact that the foil was never used in a duel to the death kind of thing, that is all I mean. I have actually dine better in foil than in epee. I know that foil takes skill just like the other weapons.

Welcome, young Epeeist! I hope you continue to enjoy the sport and this forum. You sound diplomatic, which will be helpful in the sometimes wild rantings to be found hereabouts.

Yeah, because Inq is so used to it he has a flame proof, bomb proof, poison proof bunker that he shelters in. He is still paying off the costs of all the high-tech protection built in it.

    Anyway, welcome to the forum.

This is what I did when I had pneumonia. Now that I have a life again I dont do as much. I usually ended up getting a lesson from John and he would laugh at my attempt to lunge so I was angry at him for that.
