While I have enjoyed many "martinis", I am an unabashed fundamentalist on the point that a Martini involves gin (Plymouth is my preferred) and- this is where I'm a real hardsheller- vermouth in some meaningful quantity. About 6-1, on the rocks with olives is my usual choice.
