    Missing toenail?

At the NAC DivIII event in Denver, someone accidentally stepped on my toe, turning it black and making it hurt. I thought it had gotten better, but, well, my toenail fell off just now. I have no toenail now. I don't know what to do about this

Wait a few months....it'll grow back.

Something of the same sort happened to me years ago...dropped a toolbox on my toe. That exposed nail bed is REALLY sensitive, ain't it?

I took to wearing a bandaid over it until the nail grew back.

on the rugby field, some guy stepped on my big toe with his heel stud and i just yelled the loudest profanity you've ever heard. Nobody noticed my toe and my teammates were pretty pissed that i caused a penalty awarded against us. Anyways i stumbled rest of the game, got off the field and saw that my big toe nail had gone completely purple.

Next day, went to the doc and he got this little pin and drilled it through to release the excess pressure caused by the bleeding under the nail. The nail then fell off a few days later and it took like 2 or 3 weeks to grow back?

You probably want to be careful about your toe while you dont have a nail, it could be hurt very easily.

Something similar happened to my girlfriend back in...oh, I don't know, October of this year. She lunged and when her foot came down, it kinda caught on a tile that was coming loose from the floor, which made her go over on her toes. The thing literally popped up, and when she said "Okay, I really need to stop, I hurt my foot", her opponent and director told her to "stop being a baby" and finish. Mind you, her opponent comes to the club, puts on his uniform and makes an attempt to fence, and after about five minutes he decides his knees hurt and he goes home. But the person with the toenail coming off their foot is a baby, right?

Anyway, the nail fell off a few days later and it just recently grew back. Maybe a week or so ago.

Yeah, I've had this happen a few times from basketball, soccer, and fencing. One time, I taped my toe just to keep the nail on through a tournament - when I removed the tape at the end of the day, the nail just came off with it. Mmm...

I've found that it feels better once the nail is gone. It does take a while to grow back, though, and sometimes it would be tender after practice.

I've got exactly the same problem - I ripped my toenail on the inside of my Fencing shoe. The nail has only just gotten around to falling off.

    Yup...

It happened to me a little over a year ago. Don't worry. It will grow back. Nothing special needs to be done while you're waiting for it to grow back.

This being his first time losing a toe-nail, he's just being a cry baby did it finally come off? Saturday it was on...oh well, just like everyone else said: it'll grow back on. Don't worry! it took two months for it to come off, now it'll take a couple more for it to grow back. The nurse person at NAC told you this...I guess it's not consolidating really if you don't know what to expect...hey, at least it's not purple any more! I do think the band aid idea is a good one. later

yeah, I think the random toe nail falling off thing has happened to almost everyone. the nail on my big toe on my right foot was the one that fell off for me. I broke it right at the base when my tool kit (in what I still call the 'Immaculate drop") fell off of my clubs fencing box and right onto my toe. I took about 3 months for it to finaly fall off. man, what a crappy three months!
here's some advice for what NOT to do to make it feel better:

1)The people who make clear nailpolish are liars! there stuff is NOT strong as nails. therefore, DON'T try to make a new nail out of it by liberally applying it to the affected area
    2) if you're stupid enough to try #1, FOR GODSAKES DON'T USE NAILPOLISH REMOVER TO TAKE IT OFF when you realize it was a bad idea.

to be honest, I think I found that a cotton ball, covered in neosporin w/ lydocain (or other some such antibiotic / pain reliever) put on the nail, and then covered with some cloth tape does the trick pretty nicely till the new one grows in.

My Dad smashed his thumb in a car door recently, and the thumb got infected. So he took a power drill and drilled a hole in the nail to drain it, and then the nail fell off and he's currently growing a new one.

    This thread is bloody disturbing.

    AHHHHHHHHHH!

    *gets into fetal position*

I should NOT have read this thread.

My toe is regularly screwed up from fencing, but I haven't injured it severely enough to make it fall off yet.

This happened to my fingernail once... except I did absolutely nothing to injure it that I know of. Luckily, this was before I really started fencing so it didn't affect me there. It hurt so much that I took to wearing a thimble on it, held on with a Band-Aid.

a teammate had one toenail that became ingrown and had to be surgically removed so frequently that she had the toenail PERMANENTLY removed---- she'll never get her toenail back.

they sell gel things that go around your big toe for situations like this, depending on how you use your toe they either make it feel much better, or develop holes rather quickly.

i have no idea, other than it hurt like hell for a while, and she still can't fence unless she wraps her toe in gause or something else......
