And a rediculously strong refereeing corps including (among others, so don't complain about anyone I leave out) Charlie Washburn, Greg Dilworth, Wes Glon, Vladimir Lilov, Omar Bhutta, myself, and a number of other highly qualified individuals. Lots of refs, lots of good refs. Makes for easy, enjoyable days. Lots of comments from fencers that seemed surprised/relieved at the quantity and quality of the referees. Good job Capitol division in getting people hired. And good job running the event. Great choice of venue. A few problems with getting correct seedings sent out and having to restart multiple events. Some interesting choices on tournament format. Overall a very well done event. Nice job by the UM club in making things run smoothly. The building that my hotel room was in is the "University of Maryland University College" building, which definitely raises the question of whether or not UM has a Department of Redundancy Department (or perhaps even such a major).

The quality of the referees was excellent, and the referees looked as if they were in a pretty good mood even on the second day . It was such a pleasure to fence in an event were I could turn all my mental energy to figuring out my opponent rather than trying to unravel the cognition of a referee. Apparently I have a limited amount of such mental energy, since it made all the difference to me

Although we had to reseed our pools in the WS because two members of the same club were placed in one pool, and though we fenced in a different format than the one announced ahead of time because of the small size of the field, the organizers were courteous and prompt, and made sure to communicate what was happening. It was noisy and echoing, and Wes Glon did at one point have to come find me and tell me there was a "young lady who would like to fence me" over on a strip (which was a lot nicer than needed) but for the most part it was reasonably clear where we were supposed to be.

It was a large, cool, bright venue with refreshments, armorer, vendor (I bought another epee from Absolute), and room along the walls for gear. The bout committee table was clearly marked off, and pool and DE sheets were posted where people could read them. Pleasant sunny weather didn't hurt either, though the organizers may not have had a hand in providing that.

That is the night / online/ abroad school.

Great venue (was used for past Capitol Division Tournaments back in the 1980s) and UMFC did a great job. Not big on the format they used for men's sabre. Why fence a first round to eliminate just a few fencers? Would prefer to go to DE without a second pool round. For a old guy like me having to kill myself twice fencing guys half my age took its toll so didn't have much left (also tendonitis flair up didn't help either) for the DE even though I was seeded 5th. Also the sabre reffing was great (Alex Kovacs too) although I do have some problem with Lilov when he has fencers in the same tournament. Nothing happened this time but I have had problems in the past with him in similar settings. Coaches should coach IMHO (see Ma).

Great job, Capitol Division.
More strips than needed, great referees, very amenable to corrections or 'complaints', and very friendly. If you somehow missed your call to strip (during the DEs, hall was definitely on the echo-y side, made announcements kinda hard to hear/understand when you're sitting at the other end...), someone actually came looking for you.
Overall, a very enjoyable experience (and not just for the obvious reason )

Congratulations to the tournament organizers. Great venue, well-organized bout committee, plenty of strips, excellent directors.

Any sense of what the ratings from these events were? I'm curious about teammates' new ratings.

This is NOT final, but:

ME: A2
MF: B2
MS: B2
WE: C2 (only one B made the top 8)
WF: C1 (only 24 fencers)
WS: B1

Oh, good for Charlotte! She deserves it. I didn't realize she didn't already have at least a C--she's beaten me a couple of times.

The format was bad. I mean, they originally intended to fence a round of 8 (!!) person pools, then another round of 6 person pools, then DE's. And I agree, if you're going to have 2 pool rounds, at least make it a bigger cut. A lot of people ended up with almost the same pool for the second round, with a couple different people. I know I did.
