it was well run. though one of my referee's was dubious. i felt he made a few bad calls in my de. i also watched him direct another de and saw him make at least 2 mistakes. i asked around and apperantly he's a referee examiner and highly rated. i was not the only one who felt he made bad calls in the second de. it really annoys me that this is allowed to happen. eitherway i'm happy with my result i finished about 20th in men's foil out of 42 my goal was the top 50% so i did well.

I've seen videos from world cups and world championships and olympics. You know what, even there, those highly rated referees make maybe one or two mistakes during the course of a DE. Even epee bouts.

Deal with it. It's not the end of the world. Two mistakes out of all those actions is pretty good. And chances are, they're not mistakes, but your own biased impression (which, to be fair, happens with all fencers).

Yeah, edew is right...until we're judged by perfectly flawless machines, mistakes will be made. You can't always make everybody happy. **** happens. As my former coach once advised me, "Yeah, the directing was bad. So why didn't you fence so he COULDN'T make a mistake?"

It’s the inconsistency that bothers me not the exact interpretations. Also notice I’m not blaming the ref for my wins or losses. How can anyone expect fencing to become mainstream if we might as well roll dice to decide priority?

Also, you guys sure like to preach. You gloss over some of the serious flaws in fencing by making excuses for them. Do you guys have anything to add other than clichés from the fencing community?

Yeah, really, there are never arguments about the refereeing in mainstream sports such as baseball.... Or football.... Or basketball.... Or....

It seemed pretty well run to me. I had no complaints about the directing, there were very short waits between pools/DEs, and the venue was clean and nice.

One or two bad calls does not inconsistency make. Ten to fifteen bad calls would be considered as inconsistency. I'm not saying that there aren't referees who are presiding over bouts over their levels. I've been there on both sides of the coin myself (as referee and as fencer) and sure would like to see that not happen. But, really, one or two bad calls. Or even four or five bad calls isn't inconsistency. Inconsistency is bad calls at virtually every instance.

I Understand about the consistency. But (putting on my preaching hat) if you're not part of the solution, then you're part of the problem. Why was it that you were on the side watching when you could've been refereeing?

(taking of preaching hat, it gives me the hibbee-gibees) I thought the tournament ran very well. You can tell the GRAFA put A LOT of work into it and they should be commended. Derek Cotton did a great job (like always) with the director's clinic. And the local micro brew had terrific beer.

Amen on the beer. The Grand Rapids Brewing Company was quite good. I thought the tournament ran quite well, and the GRAFA foks were very generous. I have never seen anyone feed their officials so well.

All in all I think that the tournament was run really well. The referees were treated well and the people in the clinic were given feedback on their calls. I was observed by the referee that smeric was refering to and I didn't see him make any bad calls (I'm from Kent, just like smeric).

The homebrews were good at the Grand Rapids brewery. The gin and tonics Satruday night were killer, though. Ouch!

    I'm happy...that I qualified for DivIA men's epee. Wooot!
