There are so many senior Men's Epee A-grades (14, I think), you can't do all of them. My guess is that your top men's epeeists tend to like to travel as a group and probably decide which ones to do (and not to do) as a group.

Although Heidenheim is a GP (with a team event today) - so that is a bit weird...

It wasn't necessary for them to attend. Seth, Cody and Soren are all already a lock for the World Championship team. The USA team is currently in 8th place in the World Rankings.

Like Boo said, there are many World Cups, and you have to plan which ones you will attend, optimizing your results vs dollars spent. Also, it gives our other Men Epeeists an opportunity to gain team competition experience.

Paul Soter is doing a great job with the Men's Epee program.

it is hard for them to justify paying for a trip if they are already on the Team...
It will bite USA Team in a long run, but you can not blame this guys.

Looking at the Team ME results this season, USA has a very slim chance
to qualify for the next Olympics

Seems like Cubans got travel money again, and they placed 4th in Germany...
Canada is investing some money into qualifying...
Venezuela has exceptional junior Limardo, who is dominating junior WCs and
if Fernandez will be still around they will have a chance too...

...and USFA is relying on the assumption that there will be fencers who
want to spend 10K-20K a year of their own money to qualify USA team...

    ...sad story in a making...

Experience is great when it does not hurt results so much

My guess is that Paul was able to convince only guys from his club to go to Germany... (besides Viviani, who is trying to grab 4th spot on the team)

I think to be more precise you need to look at "World Cup" version of Team standings:

    12 65 CANADA
    13 60 U.S.A.
    ...
15 53 VENEZUELA - one event short, look at this list after next GP
    ...
20 36 CUBA - With just ONE event!!!

Post Olympic years are always weak. And three years is a long way off, so there's plenty of time for people to get good and people to get injured.

I don't think the future is quite as grim as the dystopia you paint.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. There's a lot I have to do first, but I'm optimistic!
