Array Any other linguaphiles out there? I know there are a couple of you. I've found a great little program for learning language that has a lite version available for free. It is easy to use, and has a great, easy to learn interface. It doesn't install any other crap on your computer and they don't hound you to keep buying their products (they send you a link in an email and then another follow up link).
The format is simple, you're not going to reach intermediate level with the free version, but it presents a few hundred words, lets you hear how they are pronounced and then tests you with flash cards. They currently have 12 language available. The Swedish edition, for instance contains 13 word lists ranging from 5 (seasons list) to 16 (sample phrases for polite conversations) to 59 (numbers).
I'm not selling this or anything, I just thought it was a neat little freebie. They also have a deluxe edition that I may consider getting once I'm through with a couple other programs. http://www.byki.com/free_lang_software.pl
Förstår du Svenska? Hej då!

Thanks very much for this. I'll probably use the Chinese software...if they have it. Don't have time to check now...
Dammit, they don't have Chinese. Well, maybe I'll see if I can learn a little Polish then. -

Array IRISH? They list IRISH??? I thought it was gaelic, silly me. If it is (and the language name got lost in translation), I think I'll try it - always wanted to learn some gaelic. Thanks for the link. -

Array Yes, but there's Irish Gaelic and Scots Gaelic...maybe others as well. -

Array Welsh gaelic... Manx I believe is also a sort of Gaelic... With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter -

Array While we are on this topic, how about:
What languages can everyone here speak and or read. Bonus points for something exotic. I can read Latin and Spanish, and obviously English. My spanish speaking proficiency is horrible. I am also taking French next semester.
How about everyone else. -

Speak: Chinese (can write some, but I only know about 200 characters)
Read: Ancient Greek -

It is not commonly spoken as a first language outside of certain more rural areas of Ireland, but most Irish people can speak it as a result of an intensive effort by the Irish government to revive it (it was dying out). Scots Gaelic is BARELY spoken. -

forgot to thank esskreemr for his invaluable contribution! will help refine my spanish and possibly finally get into italian..we'll see. Anything free is better than paying $200 for five cds which I may eventually have to do...oh, and I won't mention my language skills - let's just say I have some, unfortunately not Swedish...I do know how to say a couple of things in Norwegian though! -
