| Baseball predictions In response to a comment made in a papal thread, I figured it would be better to give us a more appropriate thread to deal with it: Quote: |

My predictions:
AL East: Red Sox
AL Central: Twins
AL West: Angels
AL WC: Yankees
NL East: Marlins
NL Central: Cardinals
NL West: Dodgers
NL WC: Phillies (perhaps a sentimental choice...)
ALDS 1: Sox over Twins
ALDS 2: Yanks over Angels
NLDS 1: Marlins over Cards
NLDS 2: Dodgers over Phillies ( )
ALCS: Sox over Yanks (with at least one blown save by Rivera)
NLCS: Marlins over Dodgers
WS: Sox over Marlins
Any thoughts?

The Yankees are pissed off and will stop at nothing to beat us back into submission. Last year - while thrilling and wonderful - was a fluke. There's no way we're ever going to turn it around once they stop licking their wounds. (Yes, I'm an old-time Sox fan - I expect them to choke in the end, but will love them anyway.)
I was hanging around the airport in Newark a few months ago, and saw a t-shirt for sale that was a take on the old Sox shirt - "my favorite teams are the Yankees and whoever is playing the Red Sox", or something like that. I don't think they ever had those before last year. Didn't need them. Now they'll be out for blood.

| My predictions for baseball season are that it is going to jack up the traffic around Yankee stadium like it does every year. For that reason alone I really hate this season. It makes the commute from NYC a real pain in the arse.

Randy's got an ERA of 5.13. The truly sad part about that is that Johnson's ERA is still BELOW the Yankees average! Their entire starting rotation has an ERA of 5.48.
The sox, by contrast, have four good pitchers: Wakefield (1.27), Clement (3.12), Wells (3.51), and Arroyo (3.86). Even with Schilling's ERA dragging them down for the time being (6.75), they still have a net ERA of 3.42. Schilling is also far more likely to come back strong, IMO, as he is recovering from injury, while Johnson is just generally old.
I think if my prediction is wrong in any direction, it's likely to be how far the yankees will make it.

-m | I'm still hopefull the Braves will pull it off. Their team ERA, although not as good as the Marlins is still pretty good. What they need is to score more than one run every other week, and not have Kolb continue to blow games in the 9th (2 or 3 BS already). Quote: |

-m | I highlighted my picks in red. By midseason you will understand why I do not play the stock market.
Anybody read "Moneyball"(about the Athletics and Bill Beane's philosophy)? Didn't his right hand man move over to the Dodgers as GM? Coincidence? |

So, what are your picks for the playoffs, then? who's gonna win it all?

| Marlins have a knack for sputtering a little through the season, but getting hot at the end (and on through the post season). The Braves on the other hand are usually pretty steady all season, then stone cold at the end.
I would guess Red Sox vs Marlins, with Marlins taking it all. |

I saw that t-shirt, but it said: "My favorite two teams are the Boston Red Sox and whoever beats the Yankees" |

| Whenever the Yankees remember that they're supposed to be one of the most talented teams in baseball and start playing like it, will be trouble for everybody else. Until such time, they'll remain firmly in the crapper.

| Offensively, the Yankees are in good shape (despite almost 1/4 of their total season runs came in one game, against the Devil Rays). They will live or die by their pitching, and so far have mostly been doing the latter. |

| I'll jump right to the NLCS and ALCS:
Dodgers vs. Nationals (DC Wins!)
Orioles vs. White Sox (Orioles Win)
World Series:
The Nats in seven games over the Birds.

| I predict that the Milledgeville Bluestockings will score a surprise victory over the Baton Rouge Squaws, and will rise to the top of the FIU league, but will be beaten to the MMDP trophy by the Chattanooga Locomotives.
Wolverhampton Wanderers to win the World Series!

Even though his precious Birds make it to the game, he'd hate all the publicity the Nats get if your scenario comes true! He's still pushing environmental concerns so the building permits don't come through! |
