Hint: foot soldiers probably appreciated this more than cavalry

I don't want to say right or wrong, until you provide the reason.

But this answer is incorrect. - Egypt is also wrong..

Can it be that the US didn't qualify?

Hmm.. this is a bit of a shot in the dark. Between 1958 and 1961 Egypt and Syria combined into the "United Arab Republic".

In 1958, a plane carrying almost all of the Egyptian national team to the World Fencing Championships crashed, killing most of the Egyptian team. Because if this, the Egyptian team did not compete.

Did Syria send a team? And were they refused the ability to compete, because there was a single team from the UAR?

    Yikes...

That's not the one I was thinking of, so keep looking.

    But good answer...

Epee_Pox - Do you have a source for that, because I'm pretty sure they did participate. I'm curious though.
    -----------------------
This team was present at the event, but not allowed to compete.

I heard this story straight from one of the team members who was not allowed to participate, but the situation was famous enough that it should be public knowledge. I'm pretty sure I've even come across it once in a book. I honestly don't know if it's on the net anywhere.

I think E. P. must have been joking, because I skimmed a web page while googling unsuccessfully for the answer that seemed to indicate that the men's epee competition there was won by the USA.

I'm guessing with fencing and the date it may have involved the Cuban team and the revolution?
