    Would you...

Fight for ones country in WWII?

Yes. Why? I suppose I do have a sense of traditionalism and decency. Besides, the UK would have come to our aid, so its only fair. Also, we declared war on Germany first Shows how much balls the rest of the world has...

No poll, because it'll be flawed, and it means too much work.

Yes I would have, WWII is pretty much the best war to ever be in, in that the reasons behind it were the most pure. If I ever got drafted for this war or the one with North Korea, I'd go, but I wouldn't feel as much pride as I would have in 1941.

It's easy to declare war on an enemy half a world away that has many other, closer problems, and no real desire to go after you.

And of course I would have fought.

And its very easy to take comments as other things than a joke, no?

It also sounds like you are insinuating something quite insulting, too.

WWII is pretty much the textbook case for the Just War Theory.

I think that as wars go, it was a pretty damn justified war.

but i would suck in war. i would just not be useful at all.

I'd be a much better match in the Peace Corps

Just insinuating that sarcasm is awfully tough to pick up online.

Me, too. I would have to be some sort of technician, translator, or anything before a regular soldier. I'm just not...strong, nor do I have long endurance.

Related to this thread, if you had to join the armed forces, and could join any part (marines, army, navy, air force, coast guard), which would you join?

I'd say Navy, because I love the ocean, and there are alot of technical aspects I could maybe get trained in or something. Oh, and I'm really bad with blood, so army and marines is out.

If it was WWII and I couldn't get into the Army Air Corps, I'd definitely want to go infantry. Actually, same now - if I wasn't pilot-qualified, I'd look to be an Infantry Officer in either the Army or the Marines.

Let's be honest, I would serve my country in a heart beat, but I'm a total wimp. In a war today, I would join the Navt because it just seems to be the safest, haha, and I don't want to die. Very much on the pansy side, I know, but I'd do what I can, and serve, and be willing to die, I'd just try and ya know...not.

Moral purity has nothing to do with it. Your country defends your rights and you, in turn, when called to service defend your country. You can question the purpose behind the call, etc., but you must still answer it.

As for myself, I have a kind of childish bravado at the thought of conflict that makes me think I'm gonna be the faux-tough guy who pees his pants in your generic war movie.

Yes, but WW2 is a war that you can get excited for, as opposed to Iraq or Vietnam where the causes behind the war are more vague.

Yeah, me too. Well, not completely...I tend to be overly calm in situations, actually. One time I fell asleep while driving. (It was scary.) When I woke up, I was halfway into the other lane. My first thought was "OK, calm down. Now let's see...is there a car passing me?" There was, actually, and I hit it right after thinking that. (They didn't notice.) But I had always thought before that I'm one to freak out in an emergency.

Well... Not WWII, because Hungary got into his war as Pilate to the Credo. We did not want to join that war, but we HAD to fight on Germany's side.
But if there was any war that was treu for the Hungarians (not like the WW's) and that needed me (not really probable), I'm quite sure to fight for my homeland.

Is the Coast Guard part of your contrys Armed Forces?

Anyway, since Sweden is a neutral contry who has not been involved in war since 1814 (if I'm not mistaken) it is very unlikely that I would have fought. The fact that I am female emphasises this too. (Had this not been the fact I would have chosen the Marines.)

However, I do think I would do a better job with the peacekeeping forces. This should be priority to any nations Armed Forces.

Zilver -- the Coast Guard is a separate branch of the military in the US. Different service academy, different budget, somewhat different equipment, different command structure, and different uniforms.

Would I have volunteered and fought (WWII)? Yes.

Which service? Then -- probably the AAC (Army Air Corp), but possibly the Navy. Today, most probably the USAF but possibly the USN.

While I'm probably too old now to serve, I went through most of the Reserve Office Training (ROTC) with US Army, as it was the only one offered at my college. But since I wasn't on ROTC scholarship, I didn't go into the reserves after graduation.

Maybe you should also add "before or after your country was attacked (for those of us from the USA, since it took some prompting for us to get involved."
Only the bad guys preempted back then.

Yes, I'd have served in the Royal Canadian Navy.

I would have been in the air force.

But (and this may be off tpoic.) if WWIII happens, will you fight?

Chances are if WWIII happens, most people won't ba around to fight after the first couple of hours...unless it is a more conventional war. (Excuse morbitity. Exams week here, and there is no fencing tonight. )

I would have been willing to fight in WWII. I am willing to serve my country, and I am willing to put my life on the line for other's freedom and happiness.

If WWIII is a nuclear war, sadly this will be very true.
