I can't stand the ones that are nothing but dense text, like anyone has the time or inclination to read through all that. For some reason, people who make pages like that tend to also use dark or heavily-textured backgrounds, making the text even more unreadable.
Of all the news websites I read, Fox has the worst. Just a pain to navigate, too many frames, too densely designed, and almost every paragraph has hyperlinks added in the middle instead of just hyperlinking the keywords themselves.
I'm getting tired of sites with flash intros or pre-ads as well. Just direct me to the content, please.
Just because you have the right, that doesn't mean it is right. -

Just curious - not an inquisition or anything! I think your calendar need to be replaced, Mari.
Pauli wrote her posting at 13.33, which would be 1.33 PM for those of you who live only 12 hrs/day...
For those of us who live in the CET time zone it's now late afternoon.

We're beyond the age where you can throw together some HTML code and it'll be considered "quality". However, some people take that way overboard and rely entirely on flash. Flash is a nice touch for menus and stuff, but making me sit there while the entire site loads is a pain. Plus those flash intros, I'm in the habit of automatically clicking "skip".
That being said, content does go a long way. Maddox's site (maddox.xmission.com) recieves around 100 hits a minute, but is constructed out of nothing but basic HTML.
Actually content goes pretty much all the way. The interface should be desinged to be as intuitive and unobtrusive as possible. There's nothing worse than a site with no purpose whatsoever ("hey guys, welcome to my cool site! here are some links!") or a site that has the potential to be popular, but is too laden down with fancy interfaces that take forever to load (liquid generation comes to mind).
Unless you're talking about the other kind of terrible, in which case I could link quite a few sites that Craig would quickly ban me for -

Just curious - not an inquisition or anything! Thank you Zmurf....
But Maeve, it indeed sometimes DOES happen that I work night shift times.
I'm in the same time zone as Zmurf though.

a classic: http://www.xsunderground.com/thechilde/
don't click the link at the bottom of the page, though. nothing of any note and potentially offensive and/or not safe for work. the link above, though, is good.

For those of us who live in the CET time zone it's now late afternoon. Interesting... and it might not be my calendar but my concept of what time it is in Europe. Or a conspiracy by Craig to twist message posting so no one knows what time it is anywhere. whooooeeeeee

Frankly, the ones I think are the worst are those that start with telling you that you will see frequent updates of information you are interested in, but then never change their content.
These also usually have no update record so you don't know if they've ever been updated since being created.
Come to think of it, there are several fencing websites that come to mind, both club and Divisional/Sectional...
The trouble with the internet is that nothing is ever lost or forgotten; sites abandoned soon after they appear continue to show up long after their owners/creators lose interest. Until the domain registration runs out, they keep showing up--like an abandoned building where the timed lights keep cycling on and off because the electric bill has been paid a decade in advance.
Nothing is more frightening than ignorance in action. Similar Threads -
