| Fencing With Stretched Ear Piercings? I've just been wondering if there are any other fencers out there who have stretched ear piercings; I always look for others at tournaments, but I seem like the only one! So please, let me know I'm not alone :P |

| Do the ear stretchers fall into the category of jewelery? And if so, how, when you play sports, do people accomodate getting past the rule of "no jewerly during play?"
Errr, not that I would be likely to stretch holes in my ears! Certainly not before the hole in my HEAD was completed! |

| Alright, can't figure it out from the postings, so I have to ask. Just what is a stretched ear piercing? Is this something that happens accidentally, like when you catch your hook on your sweater and pull it and it's a bad thing, or is it something you have knowingly and willingly done to yourself? Like the cultures that stretch their necks with those bands until they're freakishly (to me - I recognize not to everyone) long?

| OK... thanks. I'm going to go and have some nightmares now. To each his own. (Shakes head, mutters something about kids these days...)

| Thanks, MM, for the photo. Some of my fencers were just talking about it yesterday while stretching...a couple of them have what they refer to as gauging their ears (I first thought they were saying 'gouging'). I don't see any problems with their fencing with them. Nipple rings have been a problem for some of them in the past...I recommend removing them or covering them well before fencing. Their ears are pretty well protected.

Can you take it out, then put it back in after the game? Now adays you can't even wear a hairband that has any metal in it during a game, so I wondered about a hoop and great big hole in the ear would pose a problem too. |

If that possible

| Ah, good point there. I was thinking of weapon tips snagging and pulling them. Is it convenient to remove them before fencing, or is it too much bother? (My only experience with piercing was when I was a kid and got a fishhook stuck in my finger.)

| Maeve_Mari: if the earrings you wear are solid, they're called plugs. if they're hollow (like in the pic), they're called tunnels. just FYI.
oh, and swordwench, it's not just about kids these days. Native Americans were doing it before your parents' parents' parents were even born...
BrianH: I have no problem keeping them in while fencing, it doesn't make sense for me to take them out; it doesn't really matter that much. |
