Array K, even IF the referee disallows the mask how is this anything more than a yellow card? You talk about the opponent either being thrown out or receiving a black card for not having a second mask. Seems like IF a mask were disallowed that it falls under the improper equipment (group I, and then a "reasonable" amount of time to get a replacement, which in this case would include time for the equipment check).
This certainly WOULDN'T count as a delay of bout, and even if it DID, that's alos just a group I penalty... no black card there.....
If the referee knows his/her rules you might also have just walked into an unjustified appeal or delay of bout card for yourself.

Array I would think the referree in this instance must have been motivated by something else in addition to the fencer's complaint. IMHO, the fencer who complained was trying to get her opponent flustered prior to the bout. Were she to use that complaint around the Michigan Division, I would think it would provoke a serious rolling of the referree's eyes , followed by, "Are you serious, or are you trying to fluster your opponent?" Granted, I'm not speaking for ALL referrees (but Michiganders probably know to whom I refer!).
Are there any other instances where there was a "distraction" caused by one fencer that the opponent reacted to? (For purposes of comparison) -

Array Well, if no one complains about the big number stickers they slap on the sides of masks overseas... Use the Shift key, people! Keyboard manufacturers everywhere are ineffably saddened when you ignore what they made just for you! -
Overseas? It's done on occasion here also... i know for a fact that at this years Ralph Goldstein memorial epee tournament at candlewood in CT they used this... they run the event as one big pool (30 something people this year), and its easier to keep track of everyone this way... In fact... two of my favorite fencer people out there now have numbers on their masks... (one has 39 and the other has 19) -
