| I remember a thing called "Bopper Sabers" from the late 60's - early 70's. They were "Nerf-like" sabers made from dense closed-cell foam, about as long as the real thing and wedge-shaped from a width of about 4" at the handle tapering to a point. There was no guard, and the handle looked like a kitchen knife's.
They came with little foam circle eye protectors--they looked like nerd glasses with elastic cord and no lenses.
The picture on the cover of the box showed two dudes at the beach, fencing in the sand, with one guy caught mid-execution in a classic fleche headcut (this was long before the fleche was outlawed in saber) while the other is holding a classic parry five.
Don't know who made them, or anything more than that my college roommate had a pair, and we used to spar with them every now and then. He didn't fence, but it was still fun just to bang the stuffing out of each other.

| Nerf....Fencing? Where’s the fun in that? It doesn't hurt someone through their jacket when you whap them hard.

I'm not sure how old the commercial is, but the nerf set I had was given to me in 1989. Those in the commercial look a bit more updated than the pair I had.

| I remember wanting a pair of those sooooooo badly when I was a kid.
Although watching the commercial now kinda makes me wonder why.

| To a degree. I used to make toy swords out of Constructs (anyone else remember those?)
The problem with these nerf weapons is that they encourage attacks to the bell guard (although I think I fenced a guy who was raised with these things two days ago, he attacked my bell guard so much it sounded like church was starting)

| god, I had those little soccer bopper things, and me and friends or siblings or whatever would fight, and somebody would get punched hard, and hit their head on a tree or table or something, and then blood would ensue... thats why mom threw away my nerf things.

| Yeah, same for me here. I got those one christmas like 10+ years ago. Could it have been linked to what I do now? I remember that I was too young to know I was supposed to knock out the targets. I do remember my father telling me to hit straight, because fencers don't hit with the side of the weapon (a false assumption obviously). I also remember being hit in the eye directly and it hurt.
I'm surprised how many fencers here have used nerf fencing. This calls for a poll.

What if I DIDN'T want to use one as a child, but was forced to for the amusement of others, and my present participation in fencing is nothing more than a coincidence!?
