    Epeeists only

If you don't consider epee to be the One True Weapon of Choice, please disregard this message thread and skip on ahead to something more interesting.

    Go on, now. Shoo.

OK. Are all the foilists and sabreurs gone? Good.

Epeeists, I think it's time we did something to secure our standing on this message board as the wise elders we deserve to be recognized as. I don't know how many times I've had to hold back my laughter and/or growls when one of those other so-called weapons specialists offers an "opinion" or "insight" that is just So Much Hooey.

Hey, I'm all for "free speech" and letting the crazy unwashed masses mumble to themselves on the street corners. Gawd Bless the Internet! But there's no reason they should be allowed to boost their ravings to legitimacy just because they've got X number of prestige point spots under their user IDs -- "Normally, I wouldn't give much credence to the idea of fleching in prime, but that foilist guy does have five li'l green splots by his name, so he must be pretty smart..." I don't think so.

If you're a Serious Epeeist, please post a brief note on this thread so that the rest of us can credit your account with a reputation point. If enough of us do this, we'll quickly rise above the non-epeeists and better be able to sway public opinion in the direction of the One True Weapon of Choice.

    It is our destiny.

Well, I'm a serious epeeist, but I also seriously doubt that my opinions would be worth any rep points.

I tend not to offer actual fencing-related advice/observations, anyway, being content to read what others post on the subject.

I'm reporting this thread as spam. Right after I laugh my arse off from the complete, unmitigated hubris of this post!!!

I think somebody needs to wash his mask out more often...all those paint chips and body odor are going to his head.

Hey!, isn't your avatar holding a foil, that guard seems a little small to be an epee...

Eh, people don't get rep points for anything fencing related. They get them for writing cute, humorous message (*cough* Inq *cough*), or by writing politically charged arguments (*cough* maeve mari *cough*). Some of the people with a lot of rep points don't even fence, they just pretend to.

Besides, we epee fencers are by essence lazy and therefore are above rep points.

Why does this epeeist think that the thread feels like a chain letter?

This epeeist doesn't, because chain letters are boring (and stupid) and epeeists arent.

Ooooooook then, that made no sense whatsoever.

I think I might go take a nap now.

We may be above rep points but I for one am continually irked by the not so subtle jabs about how slow we are on the strip. I would liken us to any one of the large cat family, slow to rile but deadly when going for the kill.

Sabre is more attuned with mountain goats. All that running at each other then bashing on the head. Foil reminds me more of a deadly vipers nest (both on the strip and in some of these threads.)

But we are slow. We take our time and we set things up so that we can attack when we see fit. I don't see anything wrong with that, either (though King Roche apparently does).

The only thing that bothers me is that there aren't that many epee specific threads. Perhaps that's because there's not much to be said?

I'm definitly not a slow epee fencer, I'm too impatient for that. Besides, fencing is not all about speed, it is also about precision.

Umm... you can have as much speed and precision as you like, but if you use the same action every time, I'm going to beat you.

Precision and speed are important, but epee is a very mental game.

as far as epee being slow, i find that (capt obvious answer here) not having right of way to cover actions tends to make a fencer more cautious in general

    ok dumb answer aside,
i think that once an epeeist reaches a certain level of experience, there really isnt much "doing nothing." i find that when i fence the better people in my club and at tournaments and such, there is constant probing/testing which in my opinion can make for a very interesting bout because you can see the fencers motivation for what they are doing if you pay careful attention. IMHO good epee fencing is a perfect mix of mental/physical

now as far as those fencers who stand there and stare at their opponent......

A foilist once said that he would never fence epee because it took too much thinking and planning and therefore was too difficult. A very honest foilist.
"Contrariwise," continued Tweedledee, "if it was so, it might be: and if it were so, it would be: but as it isn't, it ain't. That's logic."

Finally, slow isn't a bad thing in epee! Most of the epee people in my club tend to be jumpy bouncy things... like 3 year olds all hyped up on candy. I find it much more effective to wait them out and strike when the target is clear. Thats not saying I'm not probing and testing... I just don't hop about.

I am an epeeist at heart, I find I am treading on that fine line before you fall over and become a “serious” fencer... so I guess add my name to this chain letter
