| Yeah, either that or I'm sickened by your blatant whoring for rep points. Just like epeeists, no finesse whatsoever ...

| Well congratulations. You've gotten the attention from epeeists here that you've been craving.
Dude, just give it up and admit the source of your resentment: You Want To Be An Epeeist. It's obvious.
Everyone, let's help Essk overcome this deeply rooted psychological block. Be nice and let him know it's gonna be OK when he makes the change, scary as it may seem now. |

| Esk,
You can take off the training wheels!
Don't worry it'll be alright!
You don't need Right-of-way to be fulfilled.
Stick it in a dark corner alongside the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, and the Tooth-fairy.
As a tyke we are protected from life and reality, but as true masters of our own fate, we can discard these crutches and walk upright and proud.
You'll do fine.

Right of way is not a crutch, it is a learning tool. I understand that the true purpose of right of way is too obscure and complicated for some.

| Esk,
I too understand that many folks don't understand that the entire purpose of foil is to prepare people to fence epee.
Yes, it is a learning tool.
I think we are close to breakthrough for you.
Arise and walk!
.... And thank you for bumping this thread. It was nearly off the page.

The foil is a descendant of the small sword, in and of itself a duelling weapon. Don't mix the development of convention with the history of the foil, they are intertwined but seperate.
As a training tool, right of way was developed to train for a duel. When you decide to take the little button off of your misnamed "epee", give me a call...

| And your epee? How many people have you stabbed with that? It seems to me that we are both playing with training tools... mine just trains me in the correct method of the duel. Quote:

| We can only help you, if you choose to help yourself.
It's obvious that you have weapon envy, and that you are desperate to rid yourself of all those silly misconceptions.
It's a little like tearing off a band-aid...

| New Topic Tangent New direction for this thread:
Please share your most satisfying moment of explaining to a foilist or sabreur how epee doesn't bother with silly Right of Way conventions.
For me, it was the Summer of '01. I noticed a young new student, about 10 years old, fighting back tears of frustration after losing a practice bout with some mean foilist bullies. I asked the young man what was wrong.
"They keep cheating," he explained as he wiped his nose on the back of his sleeve. "They keep saying my stop-touches and attacks in prep are out of time or something, even though I can see the scoring lights on the wall and my light keeps coming on first."
"Kiddo," I said, "They're telling you a bunch of lies. There is no such thing as being out of time as long as you get the touch first. Let me tell you about epee..."
The short conversation that followed turned the kid's life around. His grades improved, his mother and father stopped arguing so much, he started dating high school girls, he won his B ranking in epee just one year later, and his dog rescued a kitten that had fallen down a well. ... All because of epee.
What's your story? |

| Egads! I can't believe I just found this thread... I need to check out the water cooler more often! Let me assure everyone that I about as serious an epeeist as I know how to be! I have been thrown out of foil classes for converting those that had not yet heard the Truth of fencing. I even went so far as to sell all my foils when I discovered the Truth. "Those who believed left their homes, discarded their foils or sabers and strove for the cause of all epeeists. Those are believers in Truth!" so the holy book says and so I did. As soon as I return from the salle tonight (where I fence nothing but epee and drive two hours to do it!) I shall share some glory with my brother and sister epeeists who have declared themselves on this thread.
