| Why Epee? The coaches at my club were both epeeists. I had learned on foil twenty years ago, but when I started again last year, it was straight to epee because that's what everyone at the club did.
I now realize that I knew very little of foil fencing, and while I knew of ROW then, and accepted it, when I tried epee for the first time I realized it was so much more real, more cutting edge (for lack of a better term). I had been wanting to try saber, but after doing a couple lessons and watching some of the Olympic bouts and such, it seems rather boring - just Whack, Whack, I got you first, no I had ROW, Arrgh! Repeat.
Epee truly is more fun in my opinion.

And if I draw blood or kill in a duel, I win. Who cares on whose side the ROW was? Certainly not the dead guy

| ROW is important. A lot of people go to Epee because they are too stupid to understand right of way.
The whole reason we are taught right of way is so that in a real duel we dont just run into eachother at the same time and both die. |

I don't agree with what it transformed into in modern foil and saber scoring - from real duel point of view. Doesn't mean I respect those weapons or those who fence them any less, but they are not for me.

| My tale of loss and redemption is bittersweet...
When I started fencing many years ago, I was handed a sabre fairly early on (being short and stocky) and told to "have at it!" Secretly, I always longed to hear the *CLANG* of the epee bell, and the annoyed shriek of the hapless victim of my toe-touch...
Finally, I threw convention to the wind and followed my heart. Now, I am a short and stocky epee fencer (who actually fares pretty well, thank you very much).

Someone who still dresses up foil conventions behind the facade of a "real duel." Heh. I'll bet Santy Claws fights "real duels" with the Easter Rabbit, too -- "Have at you, Bunny!" ... "No, Big Red, it's your turn to poke at me. You parried, remember?" ... "Well, so I did! Thank you, old chum. Have a gift!"

| 1. I think ROW has become a mess it no longer serves the purpose it once did.
2. Sabre is hack and slash until you get to the higher levels so while fun not that intresting long term plus its hard to find sizable tournamnets.
3. less equipment to buy and maintain.
4. the flick is stupid.

| An important quote for all Epeeists:
"It's not that I don't understand...
....I just don't care."
(and it's always better said with a Scottish dialect)

| amen sister. I also find it amusing that they all point out how stuipid the double touch is yet there are far more 2 light occurances in foil and every sabre touch is 2 lights. are they just mad because we get points for them.
