    Another New Fencer

    Hello all:

A few quick words of introduction...I am brand new to fencing, on my second introductory class at the Virginia Academy of Fencing. I have had to miss two classes since I started because of work and I was totally bummed out, so I guess that I am hooked! I wish that I had tried this sooner, as taking up a sport like this when you're middle-aged definitely limits your possiblilities, but you can't change the past. I may never become a good fencer, but I can always become a better fencer. It is nice to have a good workout that doesn't feel like WORK - I spend too much time thinking and learning while I'm fencing to realize it is athletic. For me that is a very good thing!

I am both surprised and pleased at how many other women fencers I see in my classes - especially the younger women. I am also surprised and somewhat disappointed to see some of the inequities that have persisted in the women's competitive fencing world (but at least we can wear pants if we choose to now).

I am looking forward to many years on the strip - hope you all are too.

    Thanks for reading...

    Cheers,
    Laura
