| My apologies. I don't mean to be alarmist; I do want to tell it as it is.
Death rates and crime rate are an important statistic no matter what school you go to. To be balanced, I wanted to present similar information about ND, but I don't have that in front of me.
Good luck with your oldest, Mari.

-B | Exactly, former Hopkins fencer. Sorry for the mis-write on that one! |

The idea of girls at any college other than this one really, really disturbs me. No, I'm not saying girls shouldn't go to college. I'm just saying I wish they all kept big dogs and carried heavy automatic weapons. |

| Hm. . . my daughter survived four years of college just fine, aside from the mono freshman year and the rugby concussion senior year, and despite a propensity for riding a bicycle in the dark in the rain. Heck, I survived college in New York City and then Philadelphia, despite a similar lack of common sense. The world isn't quite as scary for females as many people imagine. Perhaps it's because 80% of attacks are by people you know
And if I had a large dog it would probably bite me, and if I had a gun I'd shoot myself in the foot, speaking of acquaintance attack.

| Hard not to have such an imagination after the countless briefings (and the numbers - oh, damn, the numbers they cited...) we all get here... |

I have to agree with Peach. Millions of students - boys and girls - make it through a variety of college issues unscathed and presumably better educated in the end. My own fears have less to do with my oldest being a "her" and more to do with my oldest "leaving" for college! During the years you raise your children you hear news reports of the truly terrible things that happen to some - illness, accidents, abductions, heartache, meaness - and you worry for them as a parent. But, you send them out with instructions and a raincoat and a good pair of golashes and hope for the best out there.
Boys and girls. Neither have an advantage or weakness over the other when faced with the world. |

"2003: Female Air Force Academy cadets said they were sexually assaulted by male cadets and faced retaliation when they reported it. An independent panel found that Air Force leadership had known about sexual misconduct at the academy since 1993 and failed to address it effectively." |

| And they're not armed when it happens, if that's what you're actually saying.
And if you're just taking an opportunity to point out the sexual assaults here at the Academy, then I would note three things:
1. I, along with the majority of cadets here (girls included) are quite convinced several of the girls involved in that fiasco are lying their faces off.
2. Yes, there was a problem - as Gen. Rosa put it, even one rape means there's a serious problem. However, the media (as they are wont to do) blew it way out of proportion.
3. It has been dealt with. No, I imagine things are still not perfect here. But nothing like what happened before. Every one of us has had extensive briefings on sexual harrassment and assualt; where do you think I became paranoid? Right now, this is one of the safest possible places to go. Given my choice, every female I know would come here, simply for safety's sake. |

| I would just like to point out that common sense goes a long way towards staying safe. I go to school in New Brunswick, NJ, which isn't as bad as say Camden or Newark, but has its fair share of crime, the same as any other low-income city. I wouldn't go wandering off campus after dark, that's just asking for trouble. The assaults/robbery/rapes that you hear about around here all occur either off campus or in an isolated area on campus, after dark. Just stay safe and use common sense, stick to well lit areas, stay in groups, etc and you'll be fine.
Besides, if you shelter your kid in college and they never learn that common sense, what'll they do when they grow up and move to the city to get a job?

* About four out of ten sexual assaults take place at the victim’s own home. Two in ten take place in the home of a friend, neighbor or relative. One in ten take place outside, away from home. And about one in 12 take place in a parking garage.
* More than half of all rape/sexual assault incidents were reported by victims to have occurred within one mile of their home or at their home.
* 43% of rapes occur between 6 pm and midnight. 24% occur between midnight and 6am. The other 33% take place between 6am and 6pm.

staying in groups and away from the bad part of town will help you avoid the random attacks...... but those aren't the majority of them..........

| You're right, to avoid any possible attack, you'd have to seal yourself inside a self-sustaining plastic bubble.
And the kind of assault you're describing between acquaintances will happen at any school, anywhere.
