Habitat for Humanity

If you ever have the chance, this is a wonderfully rewarding program to do! I had the opportunity to go down to New Mexico over this spring break and work with some other colleges down there...it's one of the best things I've ever done. The progress we made in four days on three houses is...astounding.

Even if you don't have a chance to do anything like that, if you're looking for a good charity to donate too, I suggest the Valencia County, NM, Habitat for Humanity. Essentially zero overhead, very organized, very efficient. Also the most active site in the country; their goal is to completely eliminate sub-standard housing in the county by 2025.

If you're in college right now, see if your school does any kind of Habitat trips over spring break! If not, see if you can get something started!

An excellent place to help out.

Another thing they do around here (I don't know if they do it everywhere) is take light fixtures (new or mint condition) or other things they can use in construction, so if you're renovating, instead of just throwing something out, some places may take it to re-use. Every little bit helps.
