Slug is indeed an appropriate word although a little old-fashioned. I would have used the word listig, or perhaps smart, instead.

Interesting, on another forum I recently saw this exact same topic turned up, with the same opening post words. Later down in the thread it was determined that this is not always true and that you can't always get it right.
