Sabre balance point

Just a quick question for the sabre fencers.

What is your preferred weapon balance point?

I try and balance mine to about 1 cm above the guard. This can sometimes be a challenge with the new lightweight guards so I am hoarding my old heavy bruisers.

Cheers

Balance point

I've never assembled my own sabre. How is it possible to adjust the balance?

choose, your equipment wisely. What I mean is, if a blade is heavy, than you would want to match, your guard grip, etc. to be heavy, this way, it is well balanced. If the blade is really lightweight, than you would put lighter weight parts on it.

I really like having the balance point as close to the grip as possible. If I could make a sabre that just sat in my hand and was still lightweight, I'd marry it.

My coach, living god that he is , had a couple of neat old weighted pomels he gave me. They really help.

You can get the old heavy pommels still, but you have to insulate them yourself. I use a couple coats of "Shoe Goo" synthetic rubber, the stuff they sell to resole worn sneakers. It can be put on and shaped with your fingers if you keep them wet, and it's very durable once cured.

Washers are another way to add weight to the pommel of the weapon. If you're really determined you can even flatten lead fishing weights and make holes in them to fit over the tang between grip and pommel.

I was about to say that you could still get heavy steel guards from Santelli...but given Santelli's current status I guess that's no longer the case.
