Hi fencers,
Salem Classical Fencing's 2nd Annual Russ Heggen Memorial Fencing
Tournament is just a few weeks away (April 9-10)!! Last year's event was
a lot of fun. We hope this one will be, too. It will feature both
individual and team foil events. The top three finishers on Saturday
will receive medals and will be promoted to Novice classification. The
top three teams on Sunday will all receive medals.
The deadline for timely entry forms is March 31st, so get 'em on their
way, folks! Complete details of the tournament are available at our web
site:
http://salem.classicalfencing.us/tournaments/
Entry forms are available in the salle and online, as is a PDF file of a
poster you put up in your club. If you are mailing your entry form, it
must be postmarked no later than March 31st to avoid a $5 late fee. You
can also pay your fees online. Walk-ons will be assessed an additional
$5 late fee.
This will be a Prep-level tournament, which means that it is only open
to those fencers who have been competing in the AFL for less than 1 year
AND who have never won 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place. If you would like a
detailed explanation, then keep reading. The information below is from
the draft edition of "Fencing Rules of the American Fencing League".
Hope to see entry forms from many of you soon. Please let me know if you
have questions.

CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM USED IN THE AMERICAN FENCING LEAGUE
1. For the purpose of providing reasonable equality of strength in
competitions, fencers are classified on the basis of competitive
experience and achievement into the following categories (in order of
strength): Prep (lowest), Novice, Junior, Intermediate, and Senior
(highest). /[Note: It is not to anyone's advantage for a fencer to
advance through the classifications too quickly, as the fencer may miss
out on valuable competitive experience. The intent of the classification
system is not to provide a checklist to get punched as they "progress up
the ladder", but to give less experienced fencers a chance at
competition that is in their league.]/
2. The classification of an individual fencer in each weapon moves from
Prep to Senior, progressively or by skipping intervening categories, but
once a fencer achieves a higher classification, he may never be classed
in a lower category. The following rules govern the classification of
fencers:
(a) A fencer who is competing for the first year in a particular
weapon, and who is not otherwise entitled to a higher
classification, is a /Prep/. He remains a Prep for the duration of
the fencing season unless he wins first, second, or third place in
an individual competition. However, a fencer who attains Junior or
higher ranking in one weapon cannot be a Prep in any other weapon,
but automatically becomes a Novice.
<snip>
(f) Except as specifically provided above, the classification of a
fencer in one weapon has no effect upon his classification in any
other weapon, and is not affected by his winning or competing in
individual three-weapon events, or in team events, or in
invitational events, or in interscholastic and intercollegiate
events, or in unofficial club and interclub competitions. It is
therefore possible for a fencer to be a Senior in foil, a Junior in
épée, and a Novice in saber, or any other combination, except Prep
as noted.
