Yeah, I'm going to Paris next week. It's funny/ironic that even though I had a horrendous NAC, my FIE ranking went from #15 to #14. -

I chucked my foil after losing in the 64. Fencing in the NAC wasn't really on my mind this past week. I was busy worrying about the future of my fencing career, or the possibility of not having one, so I was just really emotionally, physically and psychologically drained on Sunday.
The good news is.. I got a really cool pair of adidas sneakers on sale at the marathon expo. Dan, just curious, who was the referee? -

Array There probably should have been another one awarded in MS this weekend. Keith Smart threw a hissy fit (complete with mask kicking and weapon tossing) after being eliminated. Dunno why the ref didn't card him.
Edit 1: Dan, Kudos and rep to you for owning up to your card and admitting you deserved it. Takes a lot of character to do that.
Edit 2: A fencer in ME almost earned one after insulting me in the presence of Iana Dakova (FOC for the event) and Tonya Brown (head of the Bout Committee) when he'd asked for a Bout Committee. Bad idea. Jana made him grovel instead... And I must say, he did quite a stellar job of groveling. That's it, I'm done with the discussion forums on F.net. It's had its uses, but the ideologues, ranters, and "experts" have drowned too many of the conversations. I'm changing my password to something random and never logging in again. -
I rather liked when a coach asked that Mr. Dilworth be observed. I mean, were there any other A rated foil refs sitting around and qualified to do it? -

Array I would have loved to have seen Greg's expression when THAT happened. Oh, my, gosh. -

Array Anyone know who was FENCER EXCLUDED (#20) in Div I WF? -
I was pretty out of it by that point (packing up to leave), but there were a number of medical withdrawls throughout the event, does that show up the same? -

Array Oh it was beautiful. I was standing around the BC (pretty much all weekend, actually), and the coach comes up yelling for an observer. Tanya points to Iana (FOC), and says "You have to talk to her." It took him a while to get her attention, and finally she gets him to say what strip. She looked at Greg, and told the coach, "I have no one here who can observe him. I will come watch if you wish, but nothing will happen." Every time the subject came up afterwards, Greg just looked amused.
oso, who was the fencer Iana made grovel? Sabre chicks are cutting edge -

There must be a story there. If it's the same Najm that goes to Penn State (and I don't know of another person with that name anywhere), she has never been a problem for me on strip. -

Who did he lose to? I remember at the last NAC I remember him being at before he took about a year or so off from fencing, he lost to paolo roselli in the ? 16 ? and didn't take it very well either - tho I don't remember any throwing or kicking. They're both Olympians, and it sounds like their behavior over the weekend was very similar. Fencers "accepting" black cards without protest is getting to be very rare (and even rarer at the elite level.) He stepped over the line, but I think Dan nonetheless set an excellent example by admitting to making a mistake and accepting the penalty. Frank Pratt

Maybe it was a different situation that we don't know about, maybe it was just a difference in the way the different referees handled their respective situations. We can all name a situation where someone deserved a card but did not receive one. Is it hard to imagine that when two elite-level athletes each deserved a card, only one of them received it? My impression is that after a high level bout, the first thing the referee often does is write down the score, shake hands with the coaches or some prominent spectators, maybe get yelled at for some percieved flaw in their directing or congratulated on seeing important details. In any event, not necessarily watching the losing fencer. So if you didn't see it clearly, not called.
Also, Dan's mistake happened in clear view of 3 refs, I understand, and so if Terry hadn't caught it another would have. -

Mark black carded her for spiking her mask. Emik was none to amused.
