It is good to hear that she is doing well. It looked like a lot of blood. I heard that the ambulance that was coming had an accident on its way, and a second unit came to pick her up.

Dang--I'm awfully sorry to hear that. She's a good person and an excellent fencer, and I had hoped she might win the event because she's been working hard. Shoot.

Ruth Ann is actually back in the hospital- had to go back the next morning and got operated on. She'll be there for at least a few more days and after that we're not sure.

The blade did really go all the way up to her elbow.

That's amazing. I can't even imagine how scary that must have been. I sure hope she recovers well and quickly!

Which is something that I, as a witness to the incident, find extremely surprising. At the time it looked like a typical point thrust to the palm of the hand. It sure didn't appear like any of the blade disappeared, which I would have expected had a foot of it been inside RuthAnn's arm. While I wouldn't want to disagree with medical experts on the subject, I'm forced to wonder if something else were the cause of any damage more than a couple of inches up (impact shock or pressure wave promolgating up the arm, etc.).

Ferrethater- At least in the past Inq's real-life identity has been at least semi-secret (I know of several people (including myself) who know it, but he has certainly not been public with it on the board and the mystery has been a running joke at times). Hence Prototoast's comment.

I met Ferrethater (who introduced himself) in Denver following a bout of his that I refereed.

Well, OK, what was HIS name, then?

I've never seen Inquartata and Steve Mormando in the same room at the same time. Co-incidence?

I think not.

Hopefully Ms Hacking will recover fully and be back on the strip in short order (and practice parrying with a little less pronation)

RA Hacking update

She is in a hospital in Denver. She has had surgery and they cleaned out any growing infection (sabres are dirty). The docs say that the blade seems to have missed all the major artreies, nerves, and the bone. basically, she was incredibly lucky. she will have to stay there for at lest a few more days before she has the possibility to come home. let's all hope for a speedy and full recovery for her.

With this Hacking incident coming at the heels of the Touya finger-webbing breach, and the many more unreported injuries to the fencing hand in saber, I think it's time that the FIE should look towards increasing the size of the saber guard. Perhaps to the old "Schultz" guard that American Fencers Supply used to sell. Even bigger than the schultz guard, perhaps.

The guard should be a ball surrounding the hand, with a fixed dimension, of course.

This way, all such hand injuries will be eliminated, and for most saber purists, those cheesy flicky cuts to the forearm (especially those the fencer never feels) will be eliminated and will then require more attacks and hits to the upper arm and body. This will allow for more parry-riposte in saber. As it is, many an attack either finish as scored or pre-empted with a lazy stop cut.

Lastly, it'll help budding saber clubs retain fencers who don't particularly enjoy getting hit in the knuckles in such a manner as which occurred with Touya and Hacking.

Hrmm.. Interesting idea. Although I shudder at the thought of having to replace a clubfull of sabre gaurds, its still worth a thought. Perhaps something like a basket hilt claymore?

http://www.reliks.com/merchant.ihtml?pid=1701&step=4

Except made of solid metal like an epee gaurd.

Yes, like that, and solid. No need to have holes to poke the saber through and break off.

One consideration I thought of was the larger potential for grounding, unless you insluate the edge of the gaurd all the way around.

Maybe the gaurd should go through a 120 degree angle, instead of a fully 180 degrees
