The perfect tournament for me was the 2002 Oz Parson's Tournament in OK City. It was ran flawless, lots of fun, and a great atmophere.

I had just started coaching Foil and just started fencing epee. I brought about 5 other fencers with us and we had a blast at the event and on the road.

I didn't fence as well as I should have in Epee and was knocked out in the round of 16 by a fencer I still admire today from Oklahoma. I talked to the fencer who beat me and he offered to show me somestuff and he worked with me until he was on deck for his next bout.

Because of that weekend I made a lot of friends in Oklahoma and have gone to most of the tournaments in that area that I could since then.

Currently, my perfect Tournament was a club tournament [rated, mind you].

I did badly in pools and therefore had to fence the hard path.

first DE was against a guy who I could NEVER EVER beat.

I beat him 15 - 7

Gold medal bout was against a kid around my age who always did the same move on me and always whooped the hell out of me.

I beat him so badly I made him cry for a good 15 minutes after the bout.

I got my E at that tourney, and remember it clearly.

I was fencing a U event and it was the first time I was at an arena/gymnasium and it was so cool. I talked to a lot of the people who were fencing in the event and made friends. I talked, cheered them on, it was a great atmosphere. I was able to beat my best friend in an intense bout 15-14 that I won't forget. I got in the gold medal bout for the first time in my life and they had the silver floor, my name in lights; totally kool. I lost the gold by 1 touche, but I was proud of myself to get so far and had lots of fun doing it.

My best tournament was a team tournament. We fenced a team in the semi-finals from another club with which my club has a sort of friendly rivalry. We were up the whole time, until the 3rd from last bout, were their fencer picked our fencer apart and took the lead by 3 or 4 touches. I came back and evened the score out, in the 2nd to last bout, and then our anchor took the last bout.

We took one touch lead, and then they came back, again, one touch ahead, 43-42.

Our anchor then scored 2 straight touches, and finished with a double, 45-44. It was memorable!

The "Perfect Tournamet"

The perfect tournament would...

- have 6 fencers per pool
- have 15 point DEs
- have all of the fencers seeded into DEs
- have a public address system for calling fencers to the strip that is clearly -- understandable by all in the room
- have all of the scoring equipment work flawlessly
- have all of the fencers' equipment work flawlessly
- have directors do their jobs in a manner that is beyond reproach
- have no unsportsmanlike conduct from any of the fencers
- have results (finishing positions of all fencers) posted at the event

and most important of all...

have full detailed results web-posted or e-mailed or mailed to the competitors within a week after the tournament

but that's just my $.02.

Things that contribute to a perfect tournament:

1. Sabre fenced on a wood floor with good traction and spring--no copper or cheese grater strips to eat your shoes.

2. A good vendor.

3. Non-assinine check-in.

4. Good directors.

5. A good mix of solid fencers, so I'm challenged, but I don't end up as pool bait.

6. Enough strips so you don't have long waits.

That sounds like the 05 Rose Condon to me, more or less...

The Masters-Spruill Open had the results up before I got home that night.

my perfect tournament was the excaliber in 2000 I was fencing well, the tournament ran on time with excellent refs. I was defeated (for the second time in a row.) by Mr Hayenga in the gold medal round. I fenced about as well as I could, hopefully made Gary work a little, and renewed my D00 for the 4th time that year.

I don't know if it was a perfect tournament, and I didn't win, but the Nike World Masters Games in 1998 was very well organized and smoothly run and I enjoyed the whole thing.

Bruno Goosens won the 50+ ME, and I was the only loss he had that day (the only time I ever beat him...he's way better than I am). Bob Marx won the 40+ ME, which was shown on ESPN. And don't tell Inq, but I also fenced 50+ MS and enjoyed it. Armory, check-in, results, seeding, location...everything was very smooth. Phil Reilly was the fencing commissioner.

I think my most memorable comp to date would be last year in France. Coming to the end of my year of study abroad, I'd made some really good friends at the local club, and along with the best of these we did a team competition near the Spanish border. Two of us were experienced, and the other two were beginners (only having started fencing 1 year before). We weren't expected to do very well, but in the end we came 2nd (by one hit!).

Our team itself was not the best on paper, but as a team I think nobody came near - we all got on really well together, supported each other, and most importantly had a great time. The report is here. At the end of the competition there was a fantastic buffet where we all ate soooo much food - and also we each got a goody bag full of lots of alcomohol and cakes! It was such a great weekend that I'll be going back this year and am really looking forwards to it
