| Uh.. hello? In the middle of the Collegiate Fencing Club Championships, has anyone consider other sports and what effect that is going to have on the Championships? Just in case you haven't heard, the MSU (BOTH men's and woman's) basketball team made it to the Final Four (it's a big deal in college basketball). Parking, dinner, space, and other amenities will be extremely crowded. I'm suppose to referee, and I haven't heard a damn word on where I'm staying or where I should park my car. Anyone else have this information? The MSU Fencing website doesn't have a contact name. Thanks.
BTW- the last time MSU Men's lost in the Final Four, there were riots. Couches were burnt and it made the National news.

Overall mens' winner: Northwestern 2nd: Army
Individual epee: Northwestern
Don't remember any of the others, and I left before any of the individual finals were completed.

| Fencing ran fairly late, I think. When I called my coach at 8:20 their time, they were still fencing. |

The best part was even after two days of fencing literally non-stop bouting the top people were still going on strong. The finals were in pool format. So, after the round robin, you had a semi-final pool, and a final pool. In fact, after the final men's epee pool, 4 guys had tied on bouts and indicators. So they had a vicious additional fence off. I have never seen a tournament where the top spots were so hard fought.
Overall, it was well run, with little lag time, and the direction was almost all excellent. |

Orin had beaten Bralow in the final pool in what was an absolutely awsome bout, but lost to someone else, so each had 1 defeat. Bralow then won the final bout. An interesting note: the ME 1st and 2nd place managed to fence each other 4 times over the course of the tourney, and the MF 1 and 2 fenced each other 5... |

| so.............tired.......................
DJ' and Telk have the full results (i think)........
whtouche did very well, although Umass as a whole didn't do as well as they wanted to, this may or may not have to do with their gnome problems.
WS 1. michelle weinbaum (army) 2. steph meyers (umass)
everyone from clemson may or may not have made it home.
my fishnets are more frayed and torn than before this weekend, and i'm sure that almost everyone who went has found a piece of my boa in their gear.
there were no copper strips--- none.
i didn't see a single card handed out all weekend-- my coach only saw one (a yellow... i think for a weapons malfunction.)..... like-- refs weren't calling corps-a-corps..... grrrr.
from what i've heard, epee touches were scored on the floor, on the table........
it FELT like the organization of the tournament was completely nonexistant due to the location of the bout committee, but i suppose that since we're not still fencing, they had to have done something.
i have the feeling that this tournament will be thoroughly picked apart........
congrats to the people who did well....
i'm going to sleep.

Thanks, telk, for posting the extended list. Rep point! (ie, you don't suck)

His information was wrong, but it's in reference to two different events. Army came in 2nd in the MF individual (don't know the fencer's name) losing to the fencer from NW (who apparently is a french exchange student?) for the 5th time in the tourney. The USMA MFT finished 5th overall. |

| 1) yes we've all made it home now, just not all on the same flight.
2) i don't think this tournament was very well run. unfortunately. and no offence to the guys that ran it, things just didn't work out well. though i do agree the reffing was quite good (though it was a little short). there were a few bad ones, however.
3) i found boa in my gear and MP found a gnome in her boa. |

| Also MP's observations on the organization and running of the tournement were right on. Granted, it was a huge event, but a little bit of competence is always appreciated.
The reffing was also awful, by and large. There were a handfull of *excellent* refs, and I don't want to group them with the majority. The others? Not so much. Travesties include:
-Way too many floor touches being counted
-Touches on tables being counted
-Yellow cards for corps-a-corps in epee
-Touches awarded to the passer, but not the one being passed
-Lowline attack in sabre = counterattack/prep in all situations
-Times when you didn't know WHICH STRIP THE REF WAS WATCHING, but it certainly wasn't yours
-People *running* at their opponents in sabre
Arg.
As for myself, I apparently am awful at fencing muppets. I was C-slot, and lost the majority of my bouts to schools who had scrubs as their C. Yet I was able to beat the fencers from Northwestern and UFlorida. In short, I'm attempting to fence people I should hit, and it's killing me. |

Men's foil must have been a very strong competition.

The USMA MFT finished 5th overall. | Charlie Shin was 2nd in the individual... all of Telk's results are correct, as he pulled it right from the database... we both have a copy and I'll get around to getting info out of it later... but i'm beyond exhausted... my sleep schedule recently
Thursday: Drove out to UMASS for team practice (2 hour drive), got in bed around 2 or so.
Friday: Had to be up by 7 for airport drive. Up late friday night because I had to go back to the airport in detroit to pick up one of UMASS' coaches who had to fly in later due to work... I then failed at sleeping on the floor in the basement of one of the UMASS team member's house in Ann Arbor (hour away from venue).
Saturday: Up at 5 for hour drive to venue. Got back to the house close to midnight... realized I didn't have any glue to re-wire the foil blade I promised I would rewire... back out to Meijer up in Ypsilanti (don't know if that is even close to correctly spelled), back to ann arbor to strip the blade down, rewire and reassemble. Don't know what time I ended up sleeping.
Sunday: Up again at 5:00-5:30 AM to go back to venue. After the competition ended, team dinner, drive back to ann arbor, talk in another driver who got lost on the way back down... finally fell asleep a little after 2:30AM ...
Today: Up at 5:00 to drive the coach back to the airport as he had an early flight... back down to Ann Arbor to pick up the other people in my car, back to the airport... slept about an hour or so on the plane...
So in short... I'm zonked right now and am going to go nap... I'll put up some more info later today / tomorrow.

Friday up at 8.
Friday: Meet to leave (driving) @ 1:30pm.
Saturday: Arrive at hotel in East Lansing ~3:00am
Alarm goes off @ 5:45am. Stay in bed until ~6:20am.
Reasonable night's sleep Sat night.
Sunday: Morning similar to Saturday.
9:00pm leave venue.
11:00pm finish dinner/start to drive Bruce Capin to his hotel "15 minutes away" according to directions from bar tender at restaurant
11:30pm having been convinced bartender's instructions are hopelessly wrong, start trying to get directions via phone from hotel desk clerk who possibly speaks or understands English (but unlikely it was both). Follow directions.
11:45pm repeat step from 11:30pm
Monday: 12:00am give up, manage to get back onto original directions from bartender.
12:15am find a cluster of ~6-7 hotels exactly where bartender said hotel was. It isn't one of them. Ask local gas station attendant.
12:30am get to hotel, drop Bruce off, head towards Philly
12:30pm arrive in Philly
4:15pm still awake, posting on fencing.net
