| Heh, sounds like there's a few challenges going on here.
Brian's a senior, and he's been on the team since his freshmen year, so he didn't just come from nowhere. We just have a really good MS squad this year, and the three of them have been using each other to get better. Since Dartmouth hasn't had a coach since before I got here (i'm a junior), Brian has gotten that good basically just from practice with us schmoes. He was the Bronze Medalist at the Big One. He's definitely impressive.
So last year at Nationals I remember UMass had all these fencers who they didn't have for New Englands. Especially in foil (Franco and Reardon), which made a pretty scary foil squad with Cook. Is that going to happen again?
I realzie I'm out numbered here, but I still think all you UMass guys are being a bit to confident. I mean, who knows what incredible school could show up and beat all us New England schools into the ground?
And if there aren't schools too crush us, Dartmouth will be hoping to take top Men's Club again, just like in the NEIFCs and at New Englands.
I'll definitely keep an eye out for the really stupidly dressed fencers and come over to say hello. |

| Plus Brown's top sabre fencer was really sick that day and couldn't make it. But hey, that's why Brian did so well, so i'm not complaining. |

| Yeah it was disappointing that some of the big guns were missing, I wanted to beat them as well.
Next year will be the real test.

this year, for us, seems to be a rut of "gaining experience".......
be scared of us in a couple years though, the same way one ought to be scared of us a couple years ago.
(when AS and i are seniors......... quake in fear )

| *thinks about what i have typed. realizes the masses might misunderstand. adds an addendum..*
that said, i'm a Smithie, through and through.
when we get a B on an exam, we say to our friends "i just failed that exam."
i'm not saying we won't do well, i'm not saying we won't hold our own.
i'm saying we won't grind each and every single opponent into dust.
yet.

Is that going to happen again? | One thing to remember is the NE's and NFC's have a 4 years of eligibility rule designed to make things "fair" for the varsity teams (so clubs in those meets have to follow the NCAA eligibility rule...). UMass has had several fencers take more than 4 years to graduate, resulting in fencers on the team ineligible for those meets (although participating in other meets such as their non-conference dual meets, USACFC's, etc).
Patrick Reardon will again be a member of the MF squad.
Mike Eskin (epeemike81) will be a member of the MS squad.
I believe all the rest should have been at NE's.

| I know I'm amused to see three first-year college fencers (Telkanuru, whtouche, and MP) making predictions about an event they have never attended when they've never seen ~20 of the teams involved fence.
Telk/Wtouche: Better to not talk big before the event, let your actions at the event do your talking for you at the event, and let others discuss how good you were after the fact. Be confident enough in your/your team's abilities that the results will speak for themselves. Go back to last year's similar thread and see who was talking before and after the event. http://www.fencing101.com/vb/showthread.php?t=10522

| taking the silent road this time, no need to talk crap
all i can say about me or our team on this matter is that we all think the format change (men/women split) is beneficial. anyone else who knows us or of us can draw their own conclusions. |

-B | Just how many years have those two been at umass, and what exactly is their affiliation with the university at this point (are they still undergrad, grad students, full professors?).
I feel as though 4 years of eligibility is a good thing. |

I feel as though 4 years of eligibility is a good thing. | well...they're not faculty/professors. to attend usacfc's one must be a matriculated undergrad seekeing a degree. not actually knowing their situation for certain, i'd venture a guess that they're in their super-senior year(s). and i feel their pain. or i will, soon. |

I spent an evening going over as much information from past years as i could acquire. I realize that other schools have changed as much as Smith has in the past two years. However schools that produce one good person are usually able to produce another at some point.....
I think Smith won't totally embarrass ourselves. I'm not entirely sure if that's wishful thinking or a low expectation. But it's the only one i'm very willing to make.
Considering practice attendance of certain members, certain injuries, etc- I think that once our die-hard first years are seniors, we'll be in a much better position.
but then again, i also realize that my declarations were much more subdued than those of the Umass first-years...... but then again, i think that that says something about both of our schools.......

| They are both still undergrads (super-duper seniors). Eskin will be graduating this semester, Patrick will be taking yet more time and will likely be travelling to Texas next April as well. We expect his tenure hearings to be scheduled in the near future. :)

(and, why yes, I DO enjoy nested paranthetical comments (and yes, I have made a similar comment previously (and yes, at this point I'm just making more for the sake of (gratuitously) adding more))))).
I don't know that it says something about both schools (although it might), but rather says something about the difference between you and Leland/Ben.

| I'd have to say that it has a lot to do with the history of umass v. the history of smith, and the current make up of both teams. That being said, Leland and Ben both have heads as bloated as the Hindenburg.

-B | Point taken, sir. Keeping the ego in check, sir.
Although I thought my assessment of our team's strengths (and lack therof) was fairly accurate, in all seriousness.
Also, I am a transfer, too. Sort of.
Did we hijack this thread? Why, yes, we did.
