Rules

So, I have a technical question for someone. I will be living in Europe for the next 5 months, so I need to know,

Is there a difference between American and European fencing rules?

thanks

For the most part, there aren't any major differences. It also depends on what country you're in.

Also, keep in mind that FIE gear is required for competition in some countries in Europe.

Let's get this sorted:
  • First there are the FIE rules.
  • On top of that all (or atleast most, to my knowledge) countries Fencing Federations have their own 'national' , if you will, set of rules. Although, generally these do not differ all that much from the FIE rules.
What you have to bear in mind though is that if you'll be competing you'll have to check that competitions requirements for equipment (eg. FIE kit & weapons).

Best of luck and have fun!
Oh, where are you going..?

Look for equipment that has CE on it. There are 2 levels of CE gear, there is 1, which is equivalent to FIE and 2 which is higher than requirements for U.S., since the U.S. has no requirements, except the mask must past the 12 Kilo punch. There are no requirements in the U.S. on strength of bib, jacket, etc. I believe most, probably all will require at least CE 2 for even their local tournaments.

The other noticable difference would be the name. I don't know for sure, they require the name at locals in Germany, but if they do, it will need to be on the back.
