[CFML] Classical fencing classes in Edinburgh

Dear All,

I am pleased to announce that the Macdonald Academy of Exercises
shall be opening once again in Edinburgh for 2005.

Classes shall commence on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at two
separate though very close venues.

Every Wednesday, from the 9th March, 6:30pm - 8:30pm, classes shall
be held at The Drill Hall, 36 Dalmeny Street (just off Leith Walk).
See http://www.outoftheblue.org.uk/webpages/drill_hall.htm
for further venue details.

Every Thursday, from the 10th March, 7pm - 9pm, classes shall be
held at the Pilmeny Youth Centre, 44 Buchanan Street (just off
Dalmeny Street).
See www.members.lycos.co.uk/pyc for further details.

The Academy of Exerises is a direct revival of the Royal Edinburgh
Academy of Exercises, which flourished as the towns premiere fencing
salle, established in the mid C18th by John Xavier Angelo and
continued throughout the C19th under command of French fencing master
George Roland and his sons.

The classes shall focus on C19th classical fencing, with the
principal weapon being French foil. The classical martial approach is
taught for the foil, using traditional weapons, methods and
techniques according to C19th masters and systems.
Foil may be studied as the core weapon for at least six months
before progressing to free-fencing status, where free assaulting may
be had as well as the opportunity for further training in other
weapons such as French
epee, Italian foil, duelling sabre and cane.

These are presently among the very few classical fencing classes
offered
in Europe today, and shall lead the charge in reviving these lost
Arts on a
wider scale throughout Scotland and the UK over coming years.

All are welcome to join, with the first lesson free and training
equipment supplied.

Yours Very Truly,

Mo. Paul Macdonald,
Macdonald Academy of Arms,
