| Damn SCA east kingdom Fencing tournament this upcoming saturday, in philly, im so there.
O wait! I have to be 18 to compete, what the hell? Sorry, but this really ticks me off, I started fencing when I was 16 (year and a half ago-ish) and now I'm the top student in my class (besides the instructors of course) In 5 months I'll give up this whole rant, but for now I'm really sick of people thinking of 'minors' in a second class sorta way.
Again, sorry bout the rant, but I had to vent to someone

| Sport fence.
I just got back from the Junior Olympics with my son.
He's not 18 yet either but he's constantly competing. He's been going to tournaments for over two and a half years, and he started late.
This weekend there were competitors from ages 14-20. The place was packed. Three weapons. Both sexes. Two age groups. That's twelve tournaments over the course of a weekend. My son's weapon (ME U20) had 180 competitiors.
If that doesn't sell you on SF, I don't know what will.

| Yeah, the vast array of competitions for all ages and abilities is one of the things that has sold me on this sport.
Speaking of JOs, my daughter just called from Columbus - said she did respectably in the women's U-20 epee. This is her last one -- she's been competing in JO's since she was eleven, I think, and she's nineteen now. Anyway, her first was the one in Little Rock, Arkansas, before they split off the youth events and put them in Summer Nationals. It's been wonderful for her. She sounded happy and a little cocky (her college teammates who were there were impressed at how many referees knew her and she them) and she was very happy she did well in her last JO's. What a kick!
It's just nice she can be there and fence well, see her friends, and know she belongs. I hope your son had a good experience too, Paolo!

| I was at Estrella War this past weekend. There was a tournament for kids, most a lot younger than 18...and I don't mean boffers, either.
They just don't want minors fighting against 300 pound berserk drunken Mongos; it's a liability thang...

| I feel sorry for you Xaaron.
In the UK you only have to be 13 to fence in the adult competitions. What is it with the US and age limits. In Scotland your pretty much an adult at 16 - you can consent to sex, buy a house and get married. (criminal responsibility starts at 8!) Interestingly you can't watch sex till your 18 or vote or drink. But there seems to be some real limits on you guys in the US till your 18 and even then I hear tales of over 21 bars and so on.
If anyone wants to be gve me the low down on your age limits then feel free. |

| Xaaron, to what tournament are you referring?
In the USFA I believe you can fence in Senior events (up to Div II and III) when you are 13 years old or more.
Can someone verify this?
For age groups, I believe you must have national points to fence "up".
Opens are basically "open" (13+ YO).
SCA is probably a different story.

Gav, I hope those things aren't necessarily done in that order in Scotland!
The lowdown on the age limits is this: It's a state by state decision.
For instance, in some states the legal age of consent is 14 for girls, 15 for guys, whereas in others it's 18 for both. In all states the legal voting age is 18 (nationally set), but each state--and in some cases each county within the state, like Wisconsin--sets its own legal drinking age. Legal age for being able to enter into contracts (which includes assume responsibility for debt) also varies from place to place.
In this part of Michigan you can legally buy a house at 18--if you can find a willing seller, that is--but you can't legally drink until you're 21.
It's all a matter of that part of the Constitution that reserves to the States those powers not specifically granted to the Federal government.
Yeah, it's a hodge-podge, but it's just something we have to live with.

| SCA -east kingdom; you must be 18 to compete in any type of fighting. Other kingdoms have some kid leagues, but not East. I heard a big reason is because PA has very strict child abuse laws, and the SCA doesn't wanna get sued.
Grrr, as soon as I convince my folks I'm coming to FAP (stupid lack-o-funds)
