Wireless lockout time for Sabre

Does anyone know how a wireless fencing system (as seen on TV )
handels the lockout time in sabre?
There must be some kind of communication between the two boxes the fencers are carrying, but didn't the FIE refused all RF and IR communications? (although we live in an ecrypted age)

Thanks for your reply's!

Recieving a current through the lame wire that cuts current to the sabre after 350ms seems right. Lames make wireless significantly easier; epee is the hardest.

Think of it this way. We have fencer A and B. Fencer A hits Fencer B lame which is contact with the box on Fencer B, so the Box knows they have been hit. 400ms later, Fencer B hits Fencer A lame. The box on Fencer B does not signal, since it knows it has been more than 350ms.

I hate the term wireless, since it is untrue. Reelless would be better.

Since we're talking about wireless sabre, has anybody taken it onto horseback yet?

I still say sabre on ice skates would be a good idea - and get us into the WINTER Olympics, which has much less "medal congestion."

LOL

I could have thought of that... But it does make me wonder,
how are the foil an epee systems suppose to work (considering just the lock-out) ?
I tought of a couple of methods, but apparently the transfer of a charge seems to be the
winner (according to the FIE)

There have been some other methods that have been done. One of the requirements was that it would work with the fencers existing equipment. That is why, the organizers have to pay for the technician to modify each mask by putting in the lights, supply the metalic t-shirts, etc. It is interesting that the fencers will have to buy their own t-shirts and as Barry Paul so aptly put, there are no specification or testing of the shirts if they work.

St. George had an interesting approach. They used the Piste as the common ground. The fencers needed special shoes which had conductive soles. The information of any hits would be sent through the soles and grounding wire to the box. No lights in the mask. If the one or both of the fencers was in the air like the picture at the top of the page, the box on the belt would hold the information until they came back in contact with the piste. Before each bout they would be initialized so the time stamps sent were accurate. The one flaw was if they jumped off the strip. Possibly another flaw, they may have not got the one vote needed, Rene Roch.

Wow. I'm tempted to learn skating just for that. Would you have a whole rink, or stay limited to a double sized strip?
