| I started at 14, competed for 6 years , took a 12 year break and jumped back in - I'm sorry I took the break; now I have a 16 year old son involved and an eleven year old daughter. I don't wish I'd started sooner, just wish I hadn't had to take that break.

| I'd just turned 47.
"Veteran"--love that word, "veteran"--so much more respectful than "crone".

| I was 21--introduced to it by my best friend in college. After a very long hiatus, I'm trying to get back into it more.

| I started at 17, which was not at all long ago. I'm kind of lamenting going off to college, having started with a great coach and not at all knowing what (who, rather) I'll encounter if I end up in a far-off university.

| I started at 15, which is this year. I plan to do a lot of fencing, used to be a lineman in football(american football), but fencing is SOO MUCH more fun. |

| Started when I was 16 and fenced until I was 18 non-competitively (just for fun). Then I took 3 years off when I went to Germany and my freshman year of college. Got back into fencing after that and fenced for 7 years competitively.

| But...Life began when I first picked up a sabre! All else was preparation for that moment.
Seriously, I began fencing last year when I came to University. I had wanted to start for AGES, I kept pointing these things out and looking for them. I knew what all three weapons were well before I started. I first picked up an epee (yes, an epee) when my group in grade 12 english was doing the scene in Hamlet where Polonius gets stabbed. "How now, a rat?" I must have driven that girl crazy with my questions about fencing. I'd handled swords earlier (In grade 11, my school put on Camelot). I'd wanted to start fencing since about grade 5 or 6. I seem to recall seeing some Olympic fencing coverage, which triggered "MOM!!!! I want to do THAT!!!!" Sadly, we lived about an hours drive from the nearest club, so it was a no...
When I started University, I went through that club's fair and found fencing. Havn't looked back since.

| We had our latest beginner course start last week, and as usual there's a good mix of people and ages - from 9 years old to old and wrinkly. I'm not exactly ancient myself, but the scary thing is that I've been fencing for nearly 14 years, and when I look at the kiddies in the group it makes me think: I've been fencing for longer than they've been alive Woah, I need to sit down... |
