Yeah, I saw that MS had the same conflict. I pointed it out in a courteous e-mail to the USFA, because I know there are a number of veterans who do the Division I-A in the MS as well.

I don't want to skip Sectionals. It's usually quite a good competition and worth the trip--I don't get much competition with other women. We had five last weekend for our sectional qualifier, and that was all the women sabre fencers in the division, but it included one utter novice and a woman who really fences foil and wanted to add another event for Nationals. But if I go to sectionals that probably means someone else doesn't get to do the I-A, assuming I qualify (I always have before, but heaven knows that's not always the case).

I'm in the other boat: Sectionals for me last year was 5 guys. The year before I think it was 8. This is a paltry payoff for a 14-hour drive...

Of course, this year it'll be 36 guys and a B2 event. Such is my usual luck.

You definitely have it worse than me, except for the year it was in West Virginia in 90+ degree heat and we barely had anyone. Usually we get the women from North and South New Jersey, and the top half of the event is as good as a Division I NAC. I guess this year the pressure will be off--I'm often quite nervous about qualifying.

"Barely"? Was that the year the event was fenced with the contestants stripped to the waist? I think I heard about that...

No, that would have been interesting if gruesome. That was the year the third-place bout was fenced playing rock-paper-scissors, with both fencers hooked up, because they were ready to collapse with heat exhaustion. Sarah Walsh won on strategy.

. . . and I'm not joking.
