| So who are the referees lined up and what not, so far?
How many strips are you setting up? |

| I don't know, I'm afraid. I'm not involved in organizing it, just doing my part recruitment-wise. I can ask, though. |

Also the Baquet/dinner idea at the end of fencing on Sat is a neat idea... |

| Mmm, registration fees are waived for 'A' fencers, does that include the event entry fee (given that there are separate registration and event fees....)? If one were to waive a fee it seems waiving the entry fee makes more sense than waiving the registration fee (not that it matters much, the two are the same amount for someone fencing only one weapon or only an A in one weapon). If both are waived then the language is, at best, poorly chosen.

*who won't be going unless having an A also waives the fee the airline charges :) *

Only the registration fee is being waived for As, not the event fees. Sorry, ya greedy barstids!
HOWEVER, there are cash prizes for the winner of each event ( arrangements can be made for those facing NCAA restrictions and the like ). Amounts depend on the rating of the events, and are as follows:
A4 or A3: $500
B3 or C3 $350
A2 or B2 $250
A1 $250
B1 $250
C2 $150
C1 $75
D1 $35
E1 $25
14 strips, 8 of them metal and the rest either copper mesh or rubber-mat. There's a gallery for spectators.
Confirmed refs thus far:
Mary Annavedder
Robert Carrillo
Michael Ross
Gerrie Baumgart ( FOC ).
Pending confirmations:
Gerry Benson
Ed Richards
Frank Van Dyke
Derek Cotton
8 others TBA
Oiuyt, maybe you'd like to come and fence one day and referee the other? IMO they are too heavy on foil and epee refs already, and need a good sabre ref for 'the rest of us'. I'll suggest it if you're interested/available.
Three armourers lined up.
At least one vendor ( HOM Fencing ). Fencing Post is deliberating.
There will be a massage room available---free to refs, available for a fee to all. |

| Oh great....I may have to go all that way, only to compete against my own vendor????
Hopefully for me, Saul won't go...but it's a fairly short drive...urgh. |

I'll suggest it if you're interested/available. | I'm committed to going to a graduation that weekend. Otherwise I would DEFINITELY be interested in doing something like swapping reffing service for all day Saturday and all of Sunday after the mixed sabre finishes for airfare and hotel (or even just a local bed). Enough so that I just checked Travelocity/Orbitz and discovered that airfare is only a bit over $200, so such a deal might even be reasonable. So I'm definitely interested, but unfortunately not available.
If anyone else happens to be involved with a large tournament that might be willing to exchange airfare and lodging for a decently highly rated referee (3 in sabre, 4 in foil/epee) and A-level sabre fencer to come and referee and fence, this is something that I would nearly always be interested in discussing. And Inq, if you're connected with the group planning for next year's second annual Phoenix Cup/Desert Rose tournament I will likely be available for that one.
-B :)
*who wishes the Phoenix Open were scheduled either one week earlier or one week later, both of which he has available*

| I'm thinking I might attend as a spectator. It's only a couple hours up the road from me.

| Unbeatable spring weather!?!?!? I mentioned to my coach that I was thinking of attending the Tournament and she gave me a flyer for the event. At the bottom of the flyer it reads: "Come and enjoy the fencing and the unbeatable spring weather of Phoenix."
I have lived in Arizona for over 20 years now, and I know for a fact that the "unbeatable spring weather" in Phoenix in late May will almost certainly be sunny, dry, and somewhere between 90 and 100+ degrees F. Now I'm a desert dweller and I still think that is hot. Just be prepared, especially those of you who are driving out.

| Well, there is that. By most standards summer in Arizona lasts from May to early October.
But it's a DRY heat. |

There's none of that ridiculous snow stuff, though. Counts for a lot. |
