In addition, leaks--and plain incompetence/intransigence have led to invasions of both privacy, as well as wrongful incarceraton--e.g. Valerie Plame affair, Wen Ho Lee, Richard Jewel and Brandon Mayfield.

Quite simply, I do not trust the FBI, NSA, CIA or really any government agencies to "do the right thing" out of a sense of altruism, and greatly prefer stringent legal protections on privacy.
