Everyone gets a prize. With first choice going to the winner and then down the list of categories, with one exception. Second choice doesn't necessarily go to the second place finisher. It might go to the fencer who scored the most touches. Or who received the fewest but didn't win. Or who finished fencing all their opponents first (it's self-directed).
My favorite prize was the 4 oz. airline bottle of tequila (with worm!) that went to the highest finishing fencer willing to drink it before leaving the venue.
It was one of my favorite tournaments I've ever been to.

Array as for most interesting prizes... a tournament in atlanta once gave out bottles of wine, but I'm too young for it, so a friend had to claim it. "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. And from this side only! The flight of a half-man, half-bird. Dinosaurs nuzzling their young in pastures where strip malls should be. Cookies on dowels. All those moment, lost in time. Gone, like eggs off a hooker's stomach. Time to die" -Phil Ken Sebben -

Array The best named tournament I've competed in was the "1st annual Saddam Hussein Capture Classic" -
I think the New England division has a tournament called the Jack Norton Hangover Open. It's January first. There's also the Beanpot Open, which is just random, though the trophies are ceramic pots, and the conneticut division has the Turkey Stab around thanksgiving. Oh and the NE div. also has the Pomme De Terre (potatoe in french). I know there's a story behind that one, but I can't remember it. Anyone know? -

Array A long number of years ago, a number of us were sitting around drinking beer and eating pizza at Star Pizza in Houston and bemoaning the lack of good sabre tournaments in Texas. At the time, even getting what sabre fencers there were in the area together was a bit of a chore. One thing led to another, and the suggestion was made that we just get together and host one then. Sabre only.
"Yea!" came the immediate cry. "Just for us knuckle draggers!"
"Yea! And lets give out skulls and bones for awards!"
"Yea! And lets hold it in a cave like true cavemen!"
"Yea! And we'll call it Sabre Cave!"
Thus was born the Legend of the Sabre Cave. The first one was held the following fall in College Station at Texas A&M University and continued for a few years being held in various places around the Gulf Coast Division. The other original organizers have all moved out of the area, but a few years ago I managed to resurrect the event in Dallas. Last year was the 10th anniversary of the first Sabre Cave, and it will be held again this fall the first weekend in October.
Quite a legacy for a bunch of half-drunk sabre fencers... -

Array I once fenced in a tourney called the Iron Gut. It was round robin 10 touch, but the winner of each bout stayed on strip. I won (didn't lose, didn't step off strip, therefore finished before everyone else did).
The first place prize was a bottle of vodka because "if you win that quick, you must be rushin'." I was also too young to claim it. -

Array ` In general: the Blood on the Blade Open.
For epee, how about: Insomniacs Relief or the Sominex Open.
For sabre: The Johnny Cash Memorial I Got Stripes Invitational.
For foil: Neurotics Anonymous or the Reformed Fly-Fishers Tournament. Why sabre? Because you don't take heads with the point. -
The Bert Barker Open is named for two dead cats. I find that entertaining. TSFC also hosts the Cat Fight, which is not women only, surprisingly enough. I got my Sabre E there. I need to make it to Sabre Cave -
