| cadet world champ results Just in case some of the US fencers here didn't see it - Mariel Zagunis won the Cadet Worlds Women's Sabre competition yesterday (and was the only US fencer in the top 8) and Tim Hageman took the silver in Cadet Men's Sabre.
Great job!

| Two sabre events, two medals. What's the chance that US will get medals in the other two sabre events? I think it's quite possible for Ivan Lee to win it Jr Men's Sabre and Jason Rogers to finish up in the top-4.
Looks like sabre is the US's dominant weapon for the next few years.
Which leads to...prediction for the next Olympic medal for the US.
My guess:
*Iris Zimmerman for at least a bronze in 2004
*Ivan Lee for at least a silver in 2004
We're pretty far behind in epee (especially women's epee) and have a setback in men's foil with Cliff's retirement.

| Is Cliff *completely* retired, or is there a chance he could make another Olympic run in '04? After all, didn't Ann Marsh do the same thing after '96? |

| Just up on the Jr. Worlds web site: Mariel Zagunis has made the semifinals of the Junior Women's Sabre competition-- she's going to be brining home two medals.

| Mariel has done it again-- the gold in Junior Women's Sabre. What's more, her opponent in the final and the silver medalist was Sada Jacobsen-- a 1-2 finish for the U.S.

| And Mariel had to defeat Amelia Gaillard (Jacobson's teammate) to get into the semi-finals. For a an interestingly translated interview (they musta used Babelfish) with Mariel, go to http://www.fencing2001.com/

| Bad news and good news: Iris won't be doing a three-peat- she lost to Gabrielle Varga 15-11 in the top eight. Andrea Ament has made the top 4, however, so she's bringing home at least a bronze. She fences G. Varga to get into the final bout.

| And Ivan Lee and Colin Parker took home silver and bronze, respectively. I think Ivan is mad, and he's not going home without the gold. Watch for some pretty killer stuff in the team events this weekend.

| How well is the US team doing compared to last year? I know the singular moment last year was Iris' winning the gold medal in the junior women's foil. I think Ivan Lee also took silver. What was the medals grab last year, compared to this year?

I believe this is an improvement over South Bend. Besides Iris, the only other medal I can recall off the top of my head was Jason Roger's individual sabre bronze.
It's a damn shame this haul couldn't've happened on U.S. soil!. Ah well...can't have everything.
